The annual Russell Run a fun run

GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

Cool clear spring weather welcomedmore than 200 runners to the track and soccer field behind Russell High School Saturday for the annual Russell Run. “It was a fantastic day,” expressed Tom Huisman, Russell Run chairman this year. “In the six years of the run, it was the second highest turnout we’ve had. It was a great day.” This year’s run alsomarked a first for the annual recreational event. Proceeds from this year’s Russell Run will go towards sup- port of the Sports Dome project that the Russell Kin Club is organizing to add to the township’s existing indoor recreation faci- lities. “We’re happy to help raise the profile of the Sports Dome project,” added Huisman. He estimated that between $800 and $900 so far was collected from entry fees for this year’s Run. Some runners, he noted, made an effort to do a pledge drive for the event and those results will become part of the final tally once all the pledges are collected. Run organizers are also gettingmore posi- tive feedback fromparticipants in the event, Huisman noted, so the Russell Community Sports Club, the event sponsor, is looking at the feasibility of hosting a recreational run in fall in the future. More details on the Russell Run, including participant placings and times, are available at www.russellcommunitysportsclub.org.

There was a good turnout for this year’s Russell Run, with the red, white and blue uniforms of the Russell Raiders youth soccer team very prominent in the front line of runners for both the 1.2-kilometre children’s run and the 5K distance run for older runners.
