IMPROVING SHELTER ANIMAL HEALTH & WELFARE USING THE ASV GUIDELINES - PART 1 Stephanie Janeczko, DVM, MS, DABVP (Shelter Medicine, Canine & Feline), CAWA 6:00 PM - 6:50 PM | Ballroom A Since it's initial publication in 2010 the Association of Shelter Veterinarians (ASV) Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters has become the gold standard in how to provide high quality care for animals in shelters and foster homes alike. This session will highlight some of the key recommendations and changes in the most updated document that can be used to help sheltering organizations reduce overcrowding, minimize stress, decrease infectious disease, and improve animal health and welfare. Case examples will be used to demonstrate how veterinarians can support shelters, using the ASV Guidelines as a tool to assess and improve operations. LIVES WORTH LIVING: POSITIVE WELFARE FOR SHELTER ANIMALS Stephanie Janeczko, DVM, MS, DABVP (Shelter Medicine, Canine & Feline), CAWA 8:00 PM - 8:50 PM | Ballroom A The revised ASV Guidelines utilize a positive welfare framework which emphasizes the critical need to provide animals with opportunities for positive experiences, as alleviation of suffering does not necessarily result in good welfare. This session will provide an overview of the Five Domains and positive welfare and the strong focus on mental wellbeing to help ensure shelter animals have lives worth living. Key recommendations from all sections of the Guidelines will be used to highlight and demonstrate the application of this framework and how shelters can take immediate steps to provide animals with more positive experiences. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28 _______________________________________ SURGERY OF THE STOMACH Alissa St. Blanc, DVM, MS, DACVS-SA 6:00 PM - 6:50 PM | Ballroom B This presentation will briefly review gastric anatomy and review general surgical considerations for gastric surgery. Surgical techniques including gastric biopsy, gastrotomy, gastropexy, and partial gastrectomy will be discussed, including postoperative care and considerations.

TO CUT OR NOT TO CUT: DECISION MAKING IN GI SURGERY Alissa St. Blanc, DVM, MS, DACVS-SA 8:00 PM - 8:50 PM | Ballroom B This presentation will discuss specific factors influencing the decision to move forward with gastrointestinal surgery, including perioperative case management decisions for select cases. FELINE LYMPHOMA: THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF IT ALLH Bobbi McQuown, DVM 6:00 PM - 6:50 PM | Ballroom C Discussion of the most common feline cancer, focused on both high- and low-grade presentations. We will discuss clinical features, diagnostic recommendations, treatment options, and prognosis. PULMONARY TUMORS IN DOGS AND CATS Bobbi McQuown, DVM 7:00 PM - 7:50 PM | Ballroom C Pulmonary tumors are overall uncommon but can include primary lung tumors or metastatic disease. We will review the most common primary and metastatic pulmonary tumors. We will take the opportunity to review imaging modalities, sampling considerations, and supportive diagnostics. Lastly, we will focus on treatment options and outcomes for common pulmonary tumors in both species. PALLIATIVE AND HOSPICE CARE FOR THE ONCOLOGY PATIENT Bobbi McQuown, DVM 8:00 PM - 8:50 PM | Ballroom C The role of additional care for oncology patients is growing beyond just the next best treatment. Palliative care is an important component for canine and feline oncology patients along with their primary cancer treatment and is a component of hospice care. This presentation will briefly review intestinal anatomy and review general surgical considerations for intestinal surgery. Surgical techniques including intestinal biopsy, enterotomy, and intestinal resection and anastomosis will be discussed, including postoperative care and considerations.
