CE EVENING SESSIONS

DISASTER RESPONSE: TRIAGE, FIELD MEDICINE AND WORKING IN A DISASTER ENVIRONMENT Debra Zoran, DVM, DACVIM-SAIM 7:00 PM - 7:50 PM | Room 105 Disaster response, whether it be in urban or rural areas is not the same as practicing medicine outside - there are a number of important differences in case triage and decision making, need for implementing decon, and the challenges of euthanasia in a disaster environment. This session will cover a wide variety disaster field experiences to help the learner understand the unique differences in triage, medical decision making, and euthanasia that are essential components of a disaster response and that can be difficult for inexperienced personnel. DISASTER RESPONSE: SELF CARE AND CRITICAL INCIDENT STRESS AND THE IMPORTANCE OF MEDICAL RECORDS AND DATA MANAGEMENT IN ALL OF THIS Debra Zoran, DVM, DACVIM-SAIM 8:00 PM - 8:50 PM | Room 105 The last session will cover the critical need for care record keeping, critical data collection (to help ensure animals are reunited with owners) - a process that is critical for successful re-unification of animals with owners. The second focus will be on the essential role of self care in the entire process from start to finish and after you return home in healthy recovery. Disaster response is stressful for everyone - even the most seasoned responders must attend to this important aspect of response, and be mindful of the need to know yourself and understand where and how to get help and decompress after a deployment. NON-TRADITIONAL/EXOTICS THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 26 _______________________________________ IT'S A GUT THING I: GI ANATOMY, PHYSIOLOGY & NUTRITION OF EXOTIC COMPANION HERBIVORES - RABBITS, GUINEA PIGS & CHINCHILLAS Micah Kohles, DVM, MPA 5:00 PM - 5:50 PM | Room 104 The Gastrointestinal function of ECM species is complex and dependent on proper nutrition. The anatomy and gastrointestinal physiology of rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas are different than other exotic companion mammals. Having a understanding of the GI anatomy and physiology of ECM species is key to properly educating owners, in addition to treating/diagnosing many common diseases as most we see in clinical practice are directly or indirectly related to nutrition. The anatomy and gastrointestinal physiology of small herbivores such as rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas are unique when compared to other exotic companion mammals. These species are strict herbivores, classified as hindgut (cecum and colon) fermenters, concentrate selectors, and are designed to ingest large amounts of high fibrous food. Their unique gastrointestinal system, with its rapid transit time and ability to differentiate particulates of fiber, allows them to remain small and active, while surviving on high-fiber, low-energy density plant materials. Gastrointestinal disease in these species is a very common presenting issue in clinical practice. It is often associated with dysbiosis and can present as both primary and secondary disease. In addition the their specific nutritional needs, these species require thoughtful and frequent opportunities for enrichment, as well as safe, species-accommodating habitats and living spaces. While all three species have similar gastrointestinal function and nutritional, enrichment, and environmental needs, there are some unique species traits to consider when advising clients of these unique and intelligent animals. IT'S A GUT THING II: GI ANATOMY, PHYSIOLOGY & NUTRITION OF EXOTIC COMPANION MAMMALS - FERRETS, HEDGEHOGS, HAMSTERS, RATS & EVERYONE ELSE! Micah Kohles, DVM, MPA 6:00 PM - 6:50 PM | Room 104 The Gastrointestinal function of ECM species is complex and dependent on proper nutrition. The anatomy and gastrointestinal physiology of ferrets, rats, hamsters, hedgehogs and other are different than other exotic

companion mammals Having an understanding of the GI anatomy and physiology of ECM species is key to properly educating owners, in addition to treating/diagnosing many common diseases as most we see in clinical practice are directly or indirectly related to nutrition. EXOTIC COMPANION MAMMAL CRITICAL CARE NUTRITION: HOW TO KNOW WHEN, WHAT, & HOW LONG... Micah Kohles, DVM, MPA 7:00 PM - 7:50 PM | Room 104 Exotic companion mammals require unique diets specifically formulated for their nutritional needs. During times of anorexia or poor nutritional status assist feeding may be required. Powdered recovery diets mixed with water provide essential hydration as well as routes to administer medication and nutritional support. In this lecture we will cover case-specific calculations of feeding amounts using animal body weight, appropriate metabolic factors, and activity/growth multipliers to determine the specifics of how best to provide Critical Care Nutrition. THE SENIOR BUN: COMMON DISEASES AND HOW TO ADDRESS THEM Micah Kohles, DVM, MPA 8:00 PM - 8:50 PM | Room 104 Veterinarians have a responsibility and valuable opportunity to better understand and provide care for geriatric rabbits. Through better wellness and preventative care, nutrition, and overall quality of husbandry, rabbits are living longer lives. The quality and duration of their lives is very individual and impacted by a multitude of factors including nutrition/ husbandry, environmental stress, level of wellness/ preventative care, genetics, etc. It is important to remind ourselves that age is not a disease. This lecture will cover the essentials to understanding common senior-related diseases and current therapies to support these animals. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27 _______________________________________ CLINICAL APPROACH TO FEATHER DESTRUCTIVE BEHAVIOR Lauren Thielen, DVM 6:00 PM - 6:50 PM | Room 104 Feather destructive behavior is one of the most common and frustrating challenges faced by avian veterinarians and owners alike. This lecture will discuss the systematic hunt for underlying causes and what to do now that the issue has started. The many causes of feather destructive behavior will be evaluated in light of the current literature and research behind feather destructive behavior. Treatment strategies will also be discussed. AVIAN RESPIRATORY DISEASE: TACKLING THE TAIL BOB Lauren Thielen, DVM 7:00 PM - 7:50 PM | Room 104 Increased respiratory effort is a common presentation to the avian veterinarian. Identifying the underlying cause of clinical signs and defining the location from upper airway disease, sinusitis, or lower air way disease is imperative to developing an effective treatment strategy. This session will begin with a brief overview of the unique avian respiratory anatomy and physiology, followed by respiratory diagnostics and therapeutics, and investigation on infectious diseases. AVIAN DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING: CURING THE COELOMIC CONFUSION Lauren Thielen, DVM 8:00 PM - 8:50 PM | Room 104 This lecture will be review of avian imaging, with a focus primarily on radiology interpretation among the different avian taxa, primarily focusing on psittacines. Lecture goals are to understand the information gained from all imaging modalities routinely performed in bids (radiographs, CT, ultrasound). Majority of the lecture will focus on identifying and evaluating the avian coelom and coelomic organ identification.
