CE DAYTIME SESSIONS
EMERGING PARASITES IN DOGS IN THE SOUTHWESTERN UNITED STATES Guilherme Verocai, DVM, MS, PhD, DACVM (Parasitology) 11:00 AM - 11:50 AM | Room 201 AB Many parasites have been recently emerging as issues in veterinary medicine and public health. Among these, some are zoonotic, meaning that these can also infect humans. The biology, epidemiology and clinical relevance of selected emerging parasites will be discussed. Emphasis will be given to two helminth parasites: Onchocerca lupi, the agent of canine ocular onchocercosis, and Heterobilharzia americana, the agent of canine schistosomiasis. Relevant diagnostic methods, prevention and treatment recommendations will be outlined. Current knowledge gaps will be examined. DIAGNOSING IMMUNE-MEDIATED HEMOLYTIC ANEMIA (IMHA) Diagnostic blood work is vital in identifying IMHA. In this session, tips will be shared for blood evaluation, including CBC and microscopic review of the blood film as well as ancillary tests to support or refute the diagnosis. INTERPRETING THROMBOCYTOPENIA AND COAGULOPATHIES Holly Brown, DVM, PhD, DACVP 8:00 AM - 8:50 AM | Ballroom C Diagnostic blood work (and its appropriate review) is vital in successfully managing the bleeding patient. In this interactive session, multiple cases will be presented that emphasize the importance of understanding blood work results, in particular evaluation of reported thrombocytopenia and tips for coagulation testing. Holly Brown, DVM, PhD, DACVP 9:00 AM - 9:50 AM | Ballroom C
EFFUSION CONFUSION? ESSENTIALS OF ABDOMINAL FLUID ANALYSIS Holly Brown, DVM, PhD, DACVP 10:00 AM - 10:50 AM | Ballroom C Fluids from tapped effusions often require in-time analysis to provide a diagnosis for appropriate case management. This case-based lecture is designed to highlight the important diagnostic information that can be determined from in-clinic effusion analysis, including differentiating among various inflammatory processes utilizing ancillary biochemical testing. PLEURAL EFFUSION ANALYSIS: A TALE OF 3 KITTIES Holly Brown, DVM, PhD, DACVP 11:00 AM - 11:50 AM | Ballroom C Too often, the fluids from tapped effusions are tossed in practice after therapeutic thoracocentesis. In this session, I will equip attendees with the knowledge of proper fluid analysis, allowing for accurate and timely results for proper patient management. In particular, we will discuss three cases of pleural effusion in dyspneic cats and the necessary diagnostics to distinguish among the varied etiologies. INFECTIOUS CAUSES OF FEVER IN CATS - PART 1 Michael Lappin, DVM, PhD, DACVIM 8:00 AM - 8:50 AM | Ballroom A In this lecture, Dr. Lappin will use a case based approach to discuss fever in cats with an emphasis on flea borne agents.
