SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28 _______________________________________ ACCOUNTABILITY ISN’T A FOUR-LETTER WORD: IT EMPOWERS YOUR TEAM FOR SUCCESS AND WELLBEING Kelly Cooper, DVM 8:00 AM - 8:50 AM | Room 106 Accountability. It’s a heavy word and it just feels uncomfortable. It’s like bad news. Nobody likes to give it, and nobody wants to receive it. Well, it’s time to move past those misguided perceptions. Accountability is NOT a four-letter word. It is now your new best friend and I’m going to tell you why. In this session, attendees will learn how to foster a culture of accountability, ensuring everyone understands their roles and responsibilities. Managers and doctors will discover how to communicate expectations clearly and provide constructive feedback, creating a supportive environment, while associates will recognize the importance of being accountable to themselves and their colleagues, leading to increased job satisfaction and career development. When accountability becomes a core value, stress levels decrease, trust grows, and you'll spend more time focusing on your own professional growth and personal wellbeing. Embracing accountability is about creating a supportive and empowering workplace where everyone can reach their full potential. JUST SAY IT! HOW TO GIVE AND RECEIVE FEEDBACK THAT CREATES CHANGE Kelly Cooper, DVM 9:00 AM - 9:50 AM | Room 106 Are you avoiding constructive feedback because it feels like conflict or worrying about hurting someone's feelings with the honest feedback they need to hear? What about seeking feedback for yourself? Do you relish or avoid it? While sometimes uncomfortable, feedback truly is a gift that contributes to personal growth and professional success. Without it, how else would anyone improve their performance and build stronger, more supportive relationships? In this session, you'll learn the skills and scripts for delivering effective feedback in a non-threatening way that will not only build your own resilience but also foster the wellbeing of your entire team. You'll discover how to obtain specific, actionable feedback for yourself, enabling you to identify areas for improvement and thrive in the face of challenges. Don't miss out on this opportunity to enhance your performance and build a culture of continuous growth and resilience! WHAT IF I’M NOT A GOOD DOCTOR? TEN LIBERATING REALITIES I WISH I KNEW 25 YEARS AGO Kelly Cooper, DVM 10:30 AM - 11:20 AM | Room 106 You’re amazing, Doc, and you have what it takes. But, like most of us, you probably question whether this is true from time to time. I understand because I’ve been there. As a new graduate, I thought a good doctor was 100% committed to the job, never made mistakes, and always had the right answers. Twenty-five years later, I know better, and after decades in the trenches and coaching dozens of doctors, I can tell you what makes a good doctor. And it’s not what you think it is. As veterinarians, we are driven, compassionate, and highly skilled professionals who dedicate our lives to the care and well-being of animals. However, the very qualities that make us exceptional in our field can also contribute to emotional distress and burnout when coupled with unrealistic expectations. In this session, we’re going to myth bust the perceptions of what it means to be a good doctor compared to the reality of what one actually is. We’ll talk about self-compassion and how to lower the bar you’ve set for yourself without lowering the quality of your care. We’ll also discuss how to move past mistakes and help others do the same, so you can rest in the fact that, yes, you are a good doctor, and you deserve to be here.
MANAGERS ARE PEOPLE TOO: RESILIENCE SKILLS FOR THE LEADER Andi Davison, LVT, CAPP, APPC 10:30 AM - 11:20 AM | Room 106 Managers are encouraged to work their magic and create environments that promote thriving for their teams. While this is critical, what about the managers themselves? They often get forgotten in the hustle. Turns out, their own resilience and well-being are just as important! It's crucial to give leaders skills they need to bounce back and thrive. Because, when managers thrive, the whole team thrives. COACH'S CORNER A coaching approach to leadership can create a supportive and empowering environment that encourages motivation, engagement, and accomplishment. Through active listening, powerful questioning, and goal setting, a coaching leader can have a significant impact on motivating individuals, and teams, to reach their full potential. In this interactive lecture, participants will learn the science and skills behind this powerful approach to leadership. TENDER CONVERSATIONS - BREAKING BAD NEWS Sheilah Robertson, BVMS (Hons), CertVA, PhD, DACVAA, DECVAA, DACAW, DECAWBM (AWSEL), FRCVS. 2:00 PM - 2:50 PM | Room 106 Breaking bad news to pet caregivers is something all veterinarians must do, but often struggle with. In this session tips on how to start a conversion about a serious illness or euthanasia will be discussed; this includes engaging with the owner(s), gaining trust and rapport, verbal priming, verbal and non-verbal communication, supporting the caregiver, understanding the difference between empathy and sympathy, focusing on the pet’s needs and being non-judgmental. It is also important to understand the caregiver’s budgets which are financial, time, emotional and physical. These conversations are less stressful and more effective when armed with the correct tools. A structured approach with key steps, keeps you on track and engages the caregiver in shared decision making. Thinking of these as serious or difficult conversations can cause anxiety before even stepping in the room and therefore thinking of them as tender discussions is a valuable way to Andi Davison, LVT, CAPP, APPC 11:30 AM - 12:20 PM | Room 106 change one’s mindset. Owners may direct their grief and anger at you, and it is important to understand the underlying cause of their emotions and how to redirect the conversation. All team members can benefit from mastering these skills. DIFFICULT END-OF-LIFE CONVERSATIONS Sheilah Robertson, BVMS (Hons), CertVA, PhD, DACVAA, DECVAA, DACAW, DECAWBM (AWSEL), FRCVS. 3:00 PM - 3:50 PM | Room 106 How will I know it’s time? is one of the most frequently asked questions by caregivers. Partnering with them in decision making to euthanize their pet is an essential part of a veterinarian’s job. Diseases and treatment related effects impact a patient’s quality of life and with more therapeutic interventions and radical surgical procedures now available to prolong life, the onus is on the veterinary team to put the patient’s best interests first, and quality rather than quantity of life is a priority. Hospice and palliative care embrace an inherent set of values that aim to eliminate and prevent suffering but end of life is also an area that is both spiritually and morally complex. Veterinary professionals must be able to assist families with different views about the appropriateness of ending a life. If a family chooses not to pursue euthanasia or requests a natural passing we must respect this. Hospice assisted or palliated death are terms that are being used to clarify how we can improve the quality of death in these situations. Communication about these issues can be challenging but are essential for a good outcome for the pet and family.
