Le sommet francophone cherche l'aide des comtés

L’Association française des municipalités de l’Ontario (AFMO) est à la recherche de contributions en argent et en nature pour le Comité Le Noyau et son projet d'action pour 2013-2014 qui traitera des enjeux im- portants pour la communauté francophone dans Prescott et Russell. « Ceci est très important pour notre ré-
gion », a déclaré le maire d’Alfred-Planta- genet, Jean-Yves Lalonde. Leprojetd'actioncomprend l’organisation et la présentation de deux foires d’emploi dans la région dans le cadre du Sommet de la francophonie de Prescott et Russell, les 30 et 31 mai. Les cinq sujets principaux couverts pen- dant le sommet seront l’aménagement linguistique municipal, le service en fran-
çais dans les commerces, l’immigration et l’employabilité, le collectif des associations francophones de Prescott et Russell et la force culturelle et touristique francophone. L’AFMO demande une contribution de 16 000 $ des comtés, ou 2000 $ de chacune des huit municipalités. Le budget des comtés pour 2013 est déjà approuvé. The UCPR council reviewed and approved during its Jan. 23 session a report from ad- ministration concerning an unexpected ex- pense for the popular recreation trail. A contractor hired last year for a rehab project for the trail that was part of the 2012 budget found some unexpected structural problems with three bridge crossings. The North Indian Creek Bridge, the Pendleton- Dickinson Creek Bridge, and the South Na- tion River Creek Bridge all showed signs of advanced age to the point that repairs to either strengthen or replace parts of each bridge were necessary before winter ar- rived. The extra work on the bridges totaled more than $83,000. The counties have $14,000 in the recreation trail reserve but administration will have to use part of the 2012 year-end surplus to cover the remain- der.

The counties applied for two $1 million grants from the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF) to cover one-third of the cost for paving 72 kilometres of the Prescott-Russell Recreation Trail and one- third of the cost for shoulder paving along 68 kilometres of neighbourhood cycling trails throughout the Prescott-Russell coun- ties area. Both projects together are estimated at about $8 million. The counties would cover the remaining two-thirds of the cost through either its own funds or with help also from other sources. Natasha K. Benders, the agency’s infra- structure operations director, stated in a letter to Charlebois that the federal agency has a huge number of applications for the

Sylvain Charlebois, UCPR di- rector for economic development and tour- ism, indicated that his office will not give up hope yet of getting federal funding help for the work.
