H e walked through the prison doors into freedom with a sense of fulfillment. His debt for the wrong he had done had been paid to the state. Although he was now free, there still was a lingering sense of guilt. The judge who sentenced him said, “When your debt to society has been paid, you will again be free.” But a sense of guilt continued to haunt him. He moved from place to place try ing to shake off this deep feeling of condemnation. Almost at the point of despair, he went to an evangelistic meeting. He talked to a Christian counselor but had difficulty with as surance of God’s forgiveness. The counselor called the young man’s at tention to Jesus’ words in John 3:17 and 18. “ For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world . . . He that believeth on Him is not condemned.” It was like sight to a blind person. He believed and the condemnation and guilt were gone. Many other remedies for guilt are resorted to. Indulgence in pleasure is one of the common ways used in an attempt to overcome inner condemna tion. Busying one’s self in work is another oft-tried way of escape. AJ- cohol seems to provide a temporary sense of release to habitual drinkers, only to have the guilt sense return with increased intensity as the effect of liquor wears off. A change of scene is also used as an escape hatch for condemnation. There is however only one sure and lasting way: God’s for giving grace. Jesus Christ, our Saviour, took our sin and guilt on Himself on Calvary. Believing in Him is.the sure spiritual therapy for guilt and condemnation— a permanent cure. It brings a deep sense of freedom from sin and guilt. Jesus said, “ If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be Tree in deed” (John 8:36). A boy responded to an invitation and came to a prayer room to receive Christ as his Saviour. When the coun selor asked him how he was*sure that Jesus had come into his heart, he replied, “ I am surte because I feel so clean inside.” Some Christians have been under such oppressing condem nation that they never tire of telling about what Christ did for them.
