5. 1933 Goudey #181 Babe Ruth (HOF) - PSA GOOD 2
6. 1925 W590 Lou Gehrig (HOF) - PSA AUTHENTIC
One of the most visually pleasing of all Babe Ruth’s cards and the only example of the Babe’s four cards in the 1933 Goudey issue that draws his image from a different original source photo. The “Green Ruth” is notoriously found with centering issues; this example sits slightly high on the canvas but is excellent from left to right. Consigned from an original owner collection, this card is fresh to the hobby, submitted to PSA by us for the first time during the spring of this year. Color is bright and the image clear, with a few minor surface marks and noticeably soft corners, along with pronounced (but difficult to see in the scan) creasing that traverses horizontally across the card center. An outstanding example. MINIMUM BID: $2,500
W590 is primarily a 1920’s strip card issue that persisted into 1931, produced by an unknown manufacturer and featuring what looks like news photos of roughly 75 players across multiple sports, in an somewhat low resolution back-and-white reproduction. Not even catalogued until 1968, the set is primarily known today for having hard-to-track down cards of Lou Gehrig, Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth. The cards were issued in horizontal strips, the cards extremely close to one another. As a result, the majority of the graded examples have been graded AUTHENTIC by both PSA and SGC, with much border missing. As is the case with many strip card issues, lower-grade examples are the norm. PSA has graded 17 Gehrigs, 14 of which are graded as PSA Authentic, just as this one is. This example shows an irregular cut from the original strip that’s especially noticeable at the bottom, which lacks the team and league designation in the third line of copy that is typically seen with these cards. Still, the image of Gehrig is nicely, if not remarkably, well-preserved and looks about as strong as anything can from a set that was clearly issued without much thought given to quality control. As the hobby begins to delve into more obscure cards of its greats, the W590 Gehrig stands out as a card that is rapidly increasing in value. MINIMUM BID: $1,000
