Events & Festivals January/February: Countrywide Tet Festival Considered to be the year’s most important festival, the New Year is welcomed with beating drums and firecrackers. April: Hanoi region Hung Kings Temple Festival Celebrate the legendary birth of Vietnam’s first kings, the Hung Vuong; born from the union of a mountain princess and a sea dragon. Locals make offerings and watch Vietnamese operas and sword dances. Random Facts • Slinkys were used in the Vietnam War as mobile radio antennas. • Ha Long Bay is made up of more than 1,600 islands. • The Củ Chi tunnels are a 75 mile long war memorial park. Certain parts of the tunnels are still accessible, and visitors are able to crawl through. • The bright green rice fields of the Mekong Delta can be seen from space.
Best time to travel The weather in Vietnam can be split by region. In Hanoi and the north, May to October is hot and humid with high rainfall; November to April is cooler and dry. In southern Vietnam the dry season lasts from December to late April or May, and the rainy season lasts from May to November.
The Essentials • Remember to drink lots of water as it can be very humid. The average humidity level can be 75%. • When you pay for something hold the money in both hands when passing it to the receiver. • Be aware of the mosquitos, always keep repellent on you. • Pack for all eventualities - good footwear, a raincoat and sun cream will come in handy.
