Member FOCUS Alistair Crook Vice President, Management Consultancy, Media, Cartesian

What got you interested in a career in this industry and how did you get started? I left the RAF after 12 years working as an engineer on ground radar and ground to air missile systems, so I was looking for role where I could continue to use my RF and engineering skills. At a time when there were many career options available, I was lucky enough to be offered a role at Cabletime, working alongside Ben Allwright and Stephen Close in a customer support role. You’ve had a varied career spanning many years and you clearly have a lot of strings to your bow. How would you best describe what you do, and what do you enjoy best? I still enjoy getting hands-on with engineering challenges, but this is more outside of work nowadays and includes building a double garage, laying patios and decking – to fixing washing machines. I do enjoy building a team, hiring the right people and ensuring they are supported and empowered to be successful. Apart from the odd, rare mishap, I believe I have recruited well. I place a lot of emphasis on attitude and capability; I have no intention of micromanaging anyone in the team, so expect them to know more than me in the role they have been brought in to fill.
