M3 AND ME
In the previous two editions, we honored and paid tribute to the important mothers and fathers in our lives. This month it seems fitting to pay tribute to the true patriarchs and matriarchs in my family members’ lives: my kids’ grandparents. Nothing brings families together more than the dinner table, especially when you’re having homemade Indian food. That’s why my kids love Mondays, when “Nana” and “Nani” (my wife’s parents) come over to visit. Nani always brings one of her signature dishes, and Nana always has great stories to tell. Watching our kids bond with their grandparents is incredibly touching for my wife and me. I didn’t get a chance to know my own grandparents. I have some memories of my grandmothers, but they passed when I was very young. Having Nana and Nani live 15 minutes away and my own parents (“Grandpa” and “Grandma” to my kids) in Orange County has been a real blessing. Both sets go the extra mile to play an active role in their grandkids’ lives, and the effect is nothing short of magical. FOOD, STORIES, AND LOVE HERE’S TO THE GRANDPARENTS My parents come to visit once a month, and, much like Nana and Nani, they bring plenty of delicious homemade food. The kids will happily devour any and all Mexican cuisine but, by far, the star of the show is Grandpa’s salsa verde. In fact, they put
I think this is an experience most first-generation immigrants can relate to. When my parents came to the U.S., they wanted desperately for their kids to assimilate. The more we were able to relate to our classmates, the easier time we would have fitting in. So naturally, many traditions, practices, and ways of life that had been essential to my parents’ Mexican Catholic upbringing took a back seat. There was no time to look back on the life they’d left behind; they had to focus on the lives they were building for us here in the States.
“IT’S IMPOSSIBLE NOT TO SEE THE BEAUTY IN THEIR SHARED HERITAGE WHEN WE WATCH OUR KIDS ENJOY SALSA RIGHT ALONGSIDE LENTILS AND CHICKEN CURRY.”
My wife had a very similar experience with her parents. She was told little about life in India beyond the most important Hindu traditions. While this may have been a necessary sacrifice to make our childhoods easier, it meant we were ill-equipped to communicate these important parts of our heritage to our children. That’s why we’re so fortunate our kids have their grandparents so close at hand. Now that they’ve built successful lives for themselves, they feel more comfortable revisiting their roots and passing them on to the next generation.
And just as Nani, Nana, Grandma, and Grandpa share these stories of the past, our kids share their new experiences in school and sports. Both sets of grandparents love keeping up with their grandkids’ lives; you can see the joy and energy it gives them. Watching these two generations
that stuff on just about everything, including Nani’s Indian food! It’s impossible not to see the beauty in their shared heritage when we watch our kids enjoy salsa right alongside lentils and chicken curry. They blend traditions to create new and delicious meals. But as these two generations come together, they share more than just food. The kids love practicing their Spanish with Grandma and Grandpa and learning new Hindi words from Nani and Nana. And both sets of

grandparents enjoy sharing the stories and traditions from their youth, bringing back treasured memories of their homelands. Often, my wife and I are just as enraptured by these stories as our children.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS WHAT TO EXPECT ON YOUR FIRST M3 VISIT
Many people don’t know what to expect the first time they step into a physical therapy clinic, and that can make the experience a little nerve-wracking. Whether you are seeking therapy for the first time or are coming to M3 from another clinic, we want to welcome you and let you know what to expect! Here are a few of the most common questions people ask us. WHAT SHOULD I WEAR? It’s likely your treatment will require you to perform some stretches and exercises, so it’s important to wear clothes you feel comfortable moving around in. Loose-fitting gym clothes are ideal, so you can easily expose the specific area that needs treatment. For example, wear shorts if you have a knee problem or a tank top if you have shoulder pain. WHO WILL SEE ME? When you come in for your first visit, you’ll be evaluated by one of our licensed, highly trained physical therapists. This clinical professional won’t just be the one to help you through your first visit;
they will also treat you during any subsequent visits you may need. Unlike other clinics, we understand the power of building a relationship with your therapist. Whenever you come back to M3, you can have the confidence that you’ll get to see someone who knows you and your needs. WHAT KIND OF TREATMENT WILL I RECEIVE? It really depends on the condition you’re being treated for. We have dozens of treatment modalities, including posture training and cryotherapy. That’s why the first thing your therapist will do is evaluate you, the way you move, and any physical limitations you may have. That way, they can come up with a personalized treatment regimen that gets to the root of your condition without causing you undue stress. M3 is a comfortable environment where you can expect personalized attention from an experienced physical therapist who will work to find the right treatment for you.

DOES IT HURT TO SWIM? DON’T LET SHOULDER PAIN STEAL YOUR SUMMER
With summer activities heating up, it’s important to address any aches you have sooner rather than later. All types of people, from surfers to little-league players, come into M3 this time of year because of shoulder pain. To help more people have fun in the sun, here are some common reasons for sore shoulders to help you treat the problem before it becomes debilitating. FROZEN SHOULDER As the name suggests, this condition is defined by stiffness and loss of mobility. It begins with pain caused by any movement of your shoulder, which is gradually replaced by a stiffening of your joints, reducing your range of motion. We typically see this condition in people who have had their arm in a cast, had a stroke, or were otherwise prevented from moving their shoulder for an extended period of time. Thankfully, range of motion exercises can “thaw” your joints and get you moving comfortably again. SHOULDER IMPINGEMENT SYNDROME Sometimes known as “swimmer’s shoulder,” impingement usually results from repetitive shoulder activities — especially those that involve reaching overhead. These motions can cause the tendons in your rotator cuff to
be pinched, or “impinged,” under your collar bone, leading to tears. The result is persistent pain that gets sharper when reaching overhead or behind the back. Performing a daily regimen of stretches recommended by your physical therapist helps ease the pain as your body heals. HYPERMOBILITY SYNDROME Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to be too flexible. Ligaments and joint capsules can become loose from overreaching during repetitive motion activities, or simply from growth spurts in kids. While hypermobility in the shoulder means you have a greater range of motion than the average person, there can be other debilitating symptoms involved, including pain, weakness, and even changes in your ability to move. Physical therapy exercises work to strengthen your stretched ligaments to relieve these conditions. There are many forms of shoulder pain, which is why it’s important to identify and address the root of the problem. From there, you can begin exercises designed to treat your specific ailment. Luckily, this month Roberta Brehm is conducting a shoulder pain workshop in our West Hills Clinic to teach patients the proper form for shoulder pain exercises. Call us today for a free screening if you’re having problems with your shoulders!

RELAX IN THESE COOL DESTINATIONS THIS SUMMER
As the scorching summer sun beats down, it’s hard to remember that just six months ago you were shivering through the winter, whether that meant a chilly 50 degrees F or bitter subzero temperatures. But if cooler temps sound like paradise, and a dip in the pool is no longer keeping you cool, it might be time to take a vacation somewhere chilly.
