MIND-BODY-SPIRIT Rising from the Root: Finding Source in Resourcefulness BY CAROL BURBANK
Confined by such tight constraints, we rarely find sanctuary, that tiny hut Kazuo Ono describes as the place of dreaming and evolution for the soul. Just think of the verbs we use to describe our rest: we practice meditation, we compete in sports, we exercise and stretch and push and run and when we rest we call it taking a break or col- lapsing . But rest should not be a labor; and hard work should not be the only badge of honor we earn. I love the word Ono uses to describe a true stop: replenish. It evokes a wealth of resources that fill us up and spill over with abundance. That sensual word reminds us that our greatest resource doesn’t come from networking or discipline or a job-well-done, but from a deeper source that comes through the soul into the world. How to Find Your Source and Keep it Close I could write a book about all the ways we distract ourselves from connecting with our deepest selves and through Self, the Source that fuels our unique calling. Instead of listing the most common distrac - tions, I recommend you make a “distraction” list, and discover your own particular interruptions that can get in your way. Creating Your Distraction List Write down all the ways you find to push rest away. Do you love binge-watching every episode of a show you have memorized? (I of - ten do!) Do you drive yourself to vacuum and scrub, keeping every - thing spic and span, even when you feel tired or might do something else? (I sometimes do!) Does your phone beckon you away from din - ners or writing or meditation, interrupting with notifications and
We don’t get anywhere by remaining continuously on the move. At some stage along the way we need to stop and rest. Once we do so, a tiny hut unexpectedly appears from out of nowhere, a sanctu- ary in which we can refresh ourselves and take stock of our lives. There, we refresh our souls and avail ourselves of the opportunity to replenish our forces before continuing on our way. And rest again at a later stage. As human beings, we don’t grow while on the move, but during those dreams we inhabit as we stop and rest for a while. Isn’t it at such times that our souls evolve? ~ Kazuo Ono, Butoh Dancer From Kazuo Ono’s World: From Without and Within There’s always something new calling us forward, isn’t there? Our momentum begins with joy and vision, a grand experiment. There’s a rush of energy to launch us, and a feeling of hopeful discov- ery. A power surge fuels our steps. Over time, especially as Americans, we keep ourselves moving, even as the joy is replaced by a feeling of labor and struggle. Many of us are afraid to stop or slow down, full of ambition or driven by habit. When we do pause, it’s often in the name of self-help, yet another improve- ment project we’ve taken on. We even work at being healthy! No wonder it’s sometimes hard to find a natural rhythm to re-ener - gize ourselves with rest. We talk about balancing work and play, re - pose and toil. Some of us even schedule leisure activities into our week with the same discipline we bring to project management.
