hidden among the knickknacks, used books, vintage clothing, children’s toys waiting for a new owner to love them, and good-condi- tion tools ready for a handyman to put them back to work. Next year will mark the 30 th anniversary of the Rockland Scouts Giant Annual Flea Market and troop organizers are already brainstorming ideas to mark the occasion. Loretta Buckle, one of the ramrods behind this year’s organizational efforts, explai- ned during brief pauses in the traffic at the scouts’ booth, that the overall theme will be something oriented towards children and youth. “Because this is all for the scouts,” she said, adding that the annual flea market is one of the major fundraisers for support of the local troop’s programs and projects.

Almost three decades ago, on a May long weekend, a few tables were set up in a cor- ner of the parking lot at the Giant Tiger and that was the beginning of the Rockland Scouts Annual Flea Market. This past May Day weekend, almost 200 vendor tables set up in the Grenon Your Independent Grocer’s parking lot at the cor- ner of Heritage and Laurier. Garage salers and flea market fanatics enjoyed a sunny spring day as they browsed along the open paths snaking in and out among the tables, vendor stalls, and conces- sion booths, tracking down one-of-a-kind treasures or finding wonderful surprises
