What part of your work makes you lose track of time? Researching! I’m a little bit obsessive about knowledge; knowledge is power, right? Or at least that’s what I tell myself. If a colleague poses a question relating to our material and I don’t know the answer, I can get very obsessive trying to find it. I can spend hours and hours researching, initially to help my colleague, but it soon turns into a mission / obsession. If I don’t know the answer, it does, sometimes, turn into bedtime reading on an iPad scrolling Government websites and legislation. I cannot give up until I know. What skills are required to do your role? Many skills are needed, but a few stand out. You need a good amount of tenacity, because the work can be detailed and technical. Being able to spot the small things is essential, as accuracy underpins everything we do. Strong research skills also play a huge part, sifting through legislation and guidance to get to the nitty gritty of what’s required for compliance, but also what the payroller needs to do in their day to day. On top of that, there’s a genuine commitment to the CIPP and what it represents. A big part of my role is making sure the information we produce is factual, reliable and genuinely useful for pay and pension professionals. That sense of responsibility, wanting to support people through clear, well-researched educational content, is something I consider just as important as any technical skill.

Tell me something this role has taught you? The Content Developer role has allowed me to see payroll from a different angle. Coming from simply focussing on processing payrolls, I’ve now learned how to interpret complex information into clear, meaningful guidance which helps other pay professionals. It’s taught me to appreciate that knowing payroll and being able to educate or transmit payroll information are two very different skills. However, building that bridge has pushed me to think and work more creatively and has only strengthened my pride of being part of the pay community. If your job were a movie genre, what would it be and why? I feel that you must look beyond the Content Developer role name, just like a heist movie. The set-up involves big stakes, tight timing and a plan. Similarly, a Content Developer sits at the crossroads of compliance, planning, expertise, technology and understanding. These principles lead to precise execution and careful follow-through. Heist movies make their mark for a reason, they’re about problem‑solving and staying one step ahead of the audience. A Content Developer decodes complex legislation, rules, regulations and system processes into clear, accessible learning which aids pay professionals to work with confidence and accuracy. In addition, we break down intricate data and guide users and learners efficiently through each step. To sum it up, we’re simply narrators of the payroll world, turning complexity into approachable and practical knowledge.
