Some of the most successful businesses have started at home: Apple, Microsoft and Google. The American dream is alive in entrepreneurs and people who can translate a small idea into something greater. While that dream has yet to be realized for Joseph Picou, co-founder of the Southern Craft Brewing Co., he feels he is certainly on his way.

Picou and his co-founder experimented with homebrews for many years before making the decision to sell their products. “We were making brews as a hobby, and we would submit them and win awards,” Picou said. “The American Homebrewers Association has a competition every year, and one of our beers won second in its category, so that was the inspiration to go commercial.” While its first beer has yet to be sold, the Southern Craft Brewing Co. has been making plans to invade the Louisiana

craft-beer scene. Starting with a brewery and taproom, customers will be able to sample and tour the new brewery, as well as buy growlers of beer to take home, Picou explained. “The majority of our production will be in kegs for local taverns and restaurants. We’re a local brewery, so we want to align with the local customers, so we plan to have our product in local retailers,” he said.

but also what the brewery might require in years to come. “We need flexibility with the ability for tenant improvement. We wanted the location to be easily accessible to our clients and in a place they’ll want to come to try our products,” he said. Partnering with St. John Properties meets those needs and creates possibilities for the future of the brewery, he explained. “ We need flexibility with the ability for tenant improvement. We wanted the location to be easily accessible to our clients and in a place they’ll want to come to try our products.”

In order to find the right location, Picou had to consider not only current needs

Rather than trying to conquer the beer world, Southern Craft stands out because of its roots, its products and its focus on the local market. Picou said that future expansion is a consideration, but for now, Louisiana natives can watch for Southern Craft in their favorite local establishments.
