Counties eye $1 million bike path project
L’ORIGNAL | The united counties of Prescott-Russell will seek $1 million from the federal government to improve bike paths in the region. The counties have offered to cover two- thirds of the cost of a project, if it is ap- proved b y Ottawa. The govern m ent has ad- vised that while federal funds can cover as m uch as 50 per cent of costs, priorit y could be given to work that requires onl y a one- third contribution fro m the federal govern- m ent. Ottawa is allocating $49 m illion over two y ears for the nation-wide progra m ai m ed at i m proving co mm unit y infrastructure. At a recent count y council m eeting, Cha m plain Township Ma y or Gar y Barton noted that the su m would not go far con- sidering the nu m ber of applicants. “Don’t waste too m uch ti m e on this,” he advised public works director Marc Cler m ont who presented the proposal. “How m uch clout do we have federall y ?” Cler m ont replied: “We have no choice but to appl y when the m one y is available.” If the work does get the go-ahead, there are several wa y s to spend the m one y . The trail corporation has suggested that funds be allocated to paving m ore sections of the 72-kilo m etre track.
