“Get outside y our co m fort zone.” We often hear that expression, which is akin to those tired bro m ides about thinking outside the box, or pushing an envelope. No doubt it is fine once in a while to beco m e unco m fortable. We often get “set in our wa y s,” fall into a routine, or even worse, a rut, and we tend to stick with the fa m iliar and safe. It is alwa y s good to once in a while, tr y so m ething different, challenge dif- ferent parts of our brain, atte m pt to de- velop new talents. Well, a few weeks back, m an y of us were not at all co m fortable as we found ourselves surfing in a hail stor m on Highwa y 34 south of Alexandria. The water was so high in so m e spots, the ter m “flooded engine” was taking on a literal twist. Never seen an y thing like it. This adventure had begun onl y a few m inutes earlier. We were m aking our wa y back fro m the Willia m stown Fair when m ean-look- ing, trouble-filled clouds appeared on the horizon. You do not need to be an expert to know when a sk y is angr y . The sk y opened a few m inutes south of Alexandria. S m ack! So m ething bounced off the windshield. A stone? A bird? No. This was a hail stone, the size and weight of a curling stone. OK, it was the size of a baseball, or a golf ball. Mother Nature was angr y that da y . She unleashed a shower of hail that battered all vehicles in her path. It is funn y what y ou think about during such m o m ents, such as those ads that caution that, over ti m e, windshields can

cording to the BMO surve y , one-third (32 per cent) sa y the y will have signifi- cant trouble pa y ing their bills while at school, while 27 per cent will have just enough m one y to cover their ex- penses. The Canadian Federation of Students notes that average student debt is al m ost $27,000, and according to the Canada Student Loan Progra m , m ost students take nearl y 10 y ears to pa y off their loans - with so m e taking the m axi m u m 14.5 y ears. Povert y can strike fear into the hearts of the m ost courageous. Speak- ing of strikes, have y ou noticed how spectacular the lightning stor m s have been again this su mm er? The experience can be thrilling, if y ou and y our valuable belongings do not get zapped b y a bolt. Weather events can be dangerous, and the y are all ver y different. Weather lovers are in their ele m ent at this ti m e of y ear because the conditions are as vola- tile as ever. We have at our disposal all sorts of giz m os that help us track, predict and m easure our at m osphere. But so far nobod y has developed a m eter to gauge the reactions that are provoked b y extre m e weather events. So m e laugh, so m e cr y , so m e rush to unplug the TV set. So m e veer awa y fro m pets, believing that ani m als actu- all y attract lightning. Like the weather, ever y thing changes, eventuall y . And the things that scare or challenge y ou will, in m ost cases, m ake y ou a better person, in theor y . If y ou are luck y , y ou will live to tell stories about y our adventures and clai m that there was nothing quite like it.

Re m e m ber how people used to la- m ent about how y oung people took lit- tle interest in politics? Well, dans la belle province, the y are ver y m uch engaged in the political process now. For all y ou y oungsters who are head- ing off to a post-secondar y institution soon, or planning another “strike” or bo y cott, please tr y to relax. According to the BMO 2012 Student Surve y , while the m ajorit y (59 per cent) of students in Canada are excited about the upco m ing school y ear, the poll showed that pa y ing for school is causing m ore stress than their acade m - ics. beco m e co m pro m ised b y tin y nicks. With visions of i m ploding windshields dancing in our heads, we pulled over to the side of the road, activated the haz- ard lights and reached for the ca m eras. A gazillion hail stones were unleashed, hitting the car with cringe-inducing thuds. After what see m ed like an hour, the pelting stopped. As m otorists drove back onto the highwa y , the rain ca m e and went, con- vulsing between torrential downpours and light sprinkles. Near Alexandria, Mother Nature was reall y ticked. A river – OK it was m ore like a creek -- was roaring down Main Street. Base- m ents were flooded; in low-l y ing areas, water lashed the floor boards of bat- tered vehicles. This m ust be what is like to be lashed in a squall on the high seas. After a few m o m ents of h y droplan- ing through town, the conditions i m - proved, and suddenl y , ever y one could return to their co m fort zone. Ahhh. In the retelling this will m orph into a y arn about the Great Hail Stor m of the Su mm er of 2012. Speaking of jolting and unique experi- ences, what do y ou m ake of the craz y Québec election ca m paign? Exactl y . It will be interesting to see if the Liberals
