Q&A Protein Matters We need protein for optimal health – but what is the best-absorbed protein, and when is the best time to take it?

Q What role does protein play in the body? A. Protein is critical for post-exercise muscular recovery, as well as for creating sustained energy and supporting longevity. Protein is also necessary for the body to grow and thrive, by providing it with amino acids - the functional ‘building blocks’ that are necessary for the structure, cellular repair and strength of bones and skin - and for ensuring correct metabolic function. Q How does the body utilise protein? A. After consuming protein, via food or supplementation, the digestive system breaks it down into amino acids. These amino acids are then taken up by the bloodstream and distributed to all the cells throughout the body, where they fuel countless daily functions to keep us strong and energised. It is important to be aware that the body does not store protein in the way it stores carbohydrates or fat; instead, it is necessary to eat protein regularly to maintain optimal health. Ensuring you are meeting your recommended daily protein intake is the right place to start. Q How much protein do your need? A. Adults aged 18 to 49 years need 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight for basic bodily maintenance.

People aged over 50 years should aim for more – around 1.2 grams – in order to preserve muscles and stamina. Anyone with significantly higher activity levels, such as an athlete, will require 1.5 grams per kilogram of body weight to support muscle repair, energy production and physical performance. Q When should I take a protein supplement? A. Taking protein at any time of the day will benefit the body. However, taking protein before undertaking exercise will maintain muscle and reduce muscle breakdown, while taking protein after exercising will optimise muscle recovery and repair because the body will be more receptive to protein intake at that time. Q What is the best way to take protein? A. It is important to obtain protein from a variety of food sources throughout the day. However, in a particularly busy or stressful day, quality protein powders are a quick and potent form of nutritional insurance, seamlessly providing high quality bioavailable protein in just a few moments. For example, you can add Nutra Organics Protein Water straight to a glass of water, while Nutra Organics Whey Protein and Clean Protein are must-haves in smoothies, tea, plant-based milk or healthy treats like protein balls.
