CITY PROJECTS UPDATES

Cherry Grove Public Parking Lot Restrooms

Moving Overhead Utilities Underground

The City’s program of placing above- ground utilities underground has resumed with the construction on North Ocean Boulevard between 29th Avenue North and 34th Avenue North. This project has reached 50% completion, with most underground conduits and vaults installed. The next phase will consist of utility company installation of their wires and equipment. The anticipated completion is Fall 2025. This project consists of converting overhead electrical and communications wiring to an underground conduit system; then, removing the overhead wiring and power poles. Similar conversion projects have been accomplished throughout the City with positive results. Please be advised, drivers may experience delays, lane closures, and detours as the project progresses along North Ocean Boulevard from 29th Avenue North to 34th Avenue North. The City has initiated design for an additional segment, extending this project from 34th Avenue North to 39th Avenue North, with construction to follow in late 2025.

The Cherry Grove Public Parking Lot Restrooms, located near 62nd Avenue North, are nearing completion. These public restrooms will be similar to the public restrooms at Shorehaven Drive and 21st Avenue South.

Barefoot Swing Bridge Beginning January 13, the Barefoot Swing Bridge will operate with only one lane for approximately 60 days. During this time, the sidewalk will be replaced, and routine maintenance performed. Drivers should anticipate traffic delays and temporary traffic signals.

REMEMBERING SGT. GORDON BEST January is Blue Ribbon Month in the City

of North Myrtle Beach. The North Myrtle Beach Police Foundation, members of the North Myrtle Beach Police Department, and countless volunteers have placed 2,000 blue ribbons throughout the City. All proceeds go towards helping North Myrtle Beach Police Officers in need. These blue ribbons are placed in memory of Sgt. Gordon Best, who courageously gave his life in the line of duty on January 1, 2021. He was just 30 years old, leaving behind his wife, two children, and a legacy that continues to resonate deeply with our community. On January 1, 2025, the City of North Myrtle Beach held a heartfelt Memorial Service celebrating the life of Sgt. Gordon Best. Family, friends, and his brothers and sisters in blue gathered to honor his memory, reflecting on the legacy of service, courage, and love he left behind. Sgt. Best dedicated himself to protecting our community, and his sacrifice is a solemn reminder of the bravery of those who serve. We stand together to ensure his memory remains a guiding light for us all. We will never forget the honorable service and sacrifice of Sgt. Gordon Best. His impact on our City and the lives he touched will endure forever.

Seaside Session This quarter’s Seaside Session is brought to you by Public Works.

Have you ever wondered how North Myrtle Beach keeps its waters clean and our beaches beautiful? It’s thanks to an innovative program called the Stormwater Ocean Outfall Program. This project tackles two big challenges—improving water quality and reducing inland flooding— by moving stormwater discharge pipes farther offshore, about 1,200 feet from the shoreline. Here’s How It Works: When it rains, stormwater carries bacteria and other debris into the ocean. By relocating discharge points away from the beach and into deeper waters, the program significantly lowers bacteria levels in the surf zone, making the water safer for swimmers. Plus, those old pipes you’ve seen on the beach? They’re being replaced with offshore systems that blend into the environment and work much better. Why This Matters: Cleaner Water: Offshore drainage reduces bacteria where people swim. Less Flooding: Better inland drainage systems help keep streets and properties dry. Stronger Beaches: The program protects our beach renourishment projects from stormwater damage. A Better Beach Experience: No more exposed pipes on the sand—just a cleaner, safer beach for everyone. What We’ve Accomplished So Far: Since 2002, the city has installed six ocean outfalls. The most recent outfall at 18th Avenue North was made possible with funding assistance from the state. We are improving the inland drainage system connecting near the outfall at 18th Avenue North with $7 million of additional funding from the South Carolina Office of Resilience. What’s Next? We’re already working on the next outfall locations at 17th Avenue South and 29th Avenue South, with plans for six more in the future. And to make sure the program is as effective as possible, we have a continuous water quality monitoring system in place to research and document nearshore ocean water quality improvements resulting from the outfall installations.

North Myrtle Beach is proud to lead the way in keeping our coastline clean, safe, and beautiful. It’s one more reason our beaches are a treasure for residents and visitors alike.
