They had been in American Sunday School Union work; Harold M. (’29) ajidrMrs. Coen (Ella Penper, ’29) , Sudan ^Interior Mission, Katanga, via Jos, Nigeria, W. Africa; wrote concerning encouragement in baptisms of believers and in the open­ ing of a new outstation at Wuha. Concerning intercessory prayer, they commented: “Often we tell the Chris­ tians here of your faithfulness in praying for themjand they can hardly fathom that white people so far away take time to think of them in prayer. When they really understand that you have them upon your hearts and love them, it means a great deal to them.” Byron (B. Th. ’38)- and Mrs. Chase, Boron, Calif., have been serving in the Community Baptist Church in this Mojave Desert tpwn for three years, and have seen . several souls find Christ. Tours of Musical Groups Easter vacation- tours of the Biola Choral Ensemble and the Women’s Glee Club reached a wide circle of old and new friends of the Bible In­ stitute of Los Angeles. The Ensemble, directed by Mrs. Helen. Rich, gave twelve programs, with a total attend­ ance of nearly four thousand people. The group’s first program was at the Shatter Migrant Camp, where the meeting was arranged by Christian F. (’40) and Mrs. Ummel (’39) and Jean Kirkpatrick ’40, who have been con­ ducting Christian work in the camp. Other programs were presented at the Modesto Junior College, at the First Baptist Church of Hayward, where John C. Derfelt, ’26, id pastor, and at the Zion Mennonite Church, Dinuba,: where John Kleinsasser is pastor. The Women’s Glee Club, under the direction of Herbert G. Tovey, sang in twelve churches, one High school, and at a Lions Club luncheon, the latter at El Centro, Calif. Institute graduates who are now pastors of churches in which- the Glee Club sang included: Russell Hensley, ’37, Coachella Chris­ tian Church, Coachella, Calif.; Lester Wendt*, B. Th. ’36, Calvary Baptist Church, Brawley, Calif.; Elmer L. •Wilder, ’26,. Community Church, Im­ perial, Calif.; Cíate A. Risley, ’40, assistant pastor of the College Avenue Baptist Church, San Diego, Calif., and E. Harlan Fischer, ’26, Bethany Bap­ tist Church, Long Beach. In Holtville, Calif., Carlton Buck, ’30, minister of the Christian Church, arranged a ^meeting, for the club in the Holtville High School. Word from Graduates Kermit L. Byrd,, ’41, 6703 Granger, Bell Gardens, Calif., entered the pas­ torate of the Bell Gardens Baptist Church in May. He had been serving as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Baldwin Park. He is also teaching chemistry at Westmont College, Los Angeles, Calif. Milton a . Gabler, B. Th. ’40, who has been attending Wheaton College since his graduation from the Institute, has been, voted into the, Honor Society at ■ the college by action of the faculty. Ten students are chosen annually for this recognition. Raymond (’33) and Mrs. Rogers (Delmar Howard, ’33), Rt. 1, Garden Grove, Calif.,' have been busy on the orange ranch at Garden Grove since their return from Africa in June of 1941 for furlough. them in their home, and on Sunday evenings the testimony is continued in a gospel hall in a neighboring town. Mr. and Mrs. Rogers have three sons, Floyd, Lloyd, and Jackie. ■ Mrs. Iva Lauber, Houck, Ariz., who serves under the Good News Mission to the Navajo Indians, describes ar­ riving at an Indian home with two Navajo Christian workers, in the midst of a snowstorm. They were re­ ceived hospitably, and the message of the native workers gained eager at­ tention. The man of the house re­ marked, “I was sleeping when, you came, but what you have given us is so uiuch .better than the sleep.” Edwin P. Rogers is minister of Beth­ any Chapel of Pine Street Presbyte­ rian Church, Harrisburg, Pa. Ralph C .: (’18) and Mrs. Scoville (Helen Small, ’18) have been living at 4823 Vincent Ave., Los Angeles, Calif. Mr. Scoville has’ been working in the office of the American Pro­ phetic League, of w h i c h Keith L. Brooks is President. Oscar R. Zimmermann, '40,. Rt. 1, Box 315, Lancaster, Calif., has.been serving as pastor of the Roosevelt Community Church, Roosevelt, Calif. Daniel (’34) and Mrs. Schirmer (Amy Talas, ’36), Hotevilla, Ariz:, re­ port a year of great testing and much spiritual blessing in t h e i r service among the Navajo Indians. Besides conducting five services on Sundays, they do visitation work in homes and give medical help to those whose ill­ nesses are not severe enough to re­ quire hospitalization a t G a n a d o , eighty-five miles away. Mr. and Mrs. Schirmer have two little girls. E. B. and Mrs. Cowan (Marjorie E. Rideout, ’27) are serving"in the East. San Diego Presbyterian Church, 43rd . St. and Polk Ave., San Diego, Calif., where Mr. Cowan was installed as pastor on-December 7, 1941. They had been in the pastorate of Calvary Church, Hawthorne, Calif., prior to this charge. Sewell S. (’29) and Mrs. Landrum (Hazel S. Hulburt, ’26) and their three daughters are living in Clayhole, Ky., where Mr. and Mrs. Landrum opened a Brethren Sunday-school over two years ago. With the aid of the Women’s Missionary ’ Council and the Brethren Home Missions Council as well as special donations of material and labor, a -comfortable parsonage and a well-built church seating about 350 people were dedicated a year ago. Ralph Hetrick, ’37, was. graduated from Dallas Theological Seminary, Dallas, Tex., on May 5, with a grade of 99—the highest grade given. Kenneth and’Mrs. Chrisman (Edith
