Genesis 9:1 And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruit ful,, and multiply, and replenish the éarth. 2 And the fear of you and the dread of you. shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every «fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered. 3 . Every moving thing that liyeth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb bavé I given yon (Til things. 4 Hut flesh with, the life thereof, ,which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eht. . 5 And surely your blood of your lives will 1 require: at the hand of every.beast Will I require it^ and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I require the life of man. ® Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in thé image of God made he man. 7 And you, be ye fruitful, and multi ply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein. 8 And God spake unto Noah* and to his sons with him, saying, 9 And X» behold, I establish my cove nant with you, and with your seed after you; . 10 *And with every living creature that Is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of evçry beast of the earth with yon; from ,all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth. 11 And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any 'more be a flood to destroy the earth. 12 And God said, This Is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you, and every living creature that Is with you, for perpetual generations: 13 I do set my bow In the cloud, and It shall be for a token of a covenant be tween me and the earth. 14 And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the- bow shall be seen in the cloud: 15 And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may re member the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that Is upon the earth. LESSON TEXT : Gen. 9:1-16. GOLDEN TEXT : “I will remember my covenant” (Gen. 9:15). DEVOTIONAL READING: 2 Pet. 3:8-13. Outline and Exposition I. T he N ew O rder (1-7) B OD’S GOVERNMENTAL, or prov ent order is introduced by God for the governing of human responsibil ity. First, there was a change qf domin ion (vs. 1, 2). Up to this point in his tory, all creatures were under the dominion and control of man by the mere force of instinct implanted in them by God the Creator. They had a fear of man in the sense of recogniz ing him as supreme in the creation, a fear akin to awe, fulfilling the pur pose of God in man’s creation. Now, however, a fear akin to dread settled upon the creatures. Since that time, they must be tamed, and kdpt tamed, by the force of the dread that rests

upon them. They fear man, flee from • him, and if not kept tajned revert to their wild state, and man loses his dominion over them. S Second, there was a change in diet (vs. 3, 4). Up to this point in history, man had been a vegetarian; now he was given meat to eat. The one prohi bition was that the blood should not be eaten, the reason being that “ the life . . . is the blood thereof.” Surely . there is a reminder here of the blood shed upon Calvary’s cross, proclaim ing that without that blood there could be no remission of sin (cf. Lev. 17:11; John 10:11). Third,- there was a change in re sponsibility (vs. 5-7). This method is unlike God’s dealing with Cain. Man, from Noah’s day onward, has been responsible to • judge the deeds of the flesh—one of the principles of all human government. This includes the direction concerning capital punish ment. Capital punishment is one thing, and it is quite another thing for an individual to take the law into his own hands and attempt to inflict that punishment which only the gov-, ernment can righteously i m p o s e . Nevertheless, man proved he could not govern himself. He revealed his incapacity to meet his responsibility,» not because of lack of authority but lack of strength (cf. Judg. 2; 1 Ki. 11). The world must wait for THE MAN, Christ Jesus, to exercise proper gov ernment upon the earth. II. T he N ew C ovenant (8-16) A covenant is an agreement be tween, certain persons, in this case between God and man. It carries 51 token (it may be a signed paper) which is satisfactory to both parties. 'if With this covenant after the flood, such a token was given. The persons in this covenant were God, and Noah and his seed (vs. 8-11), which includes every human being living since Noah’s day. The terms of this covenant w 6 re all on God’s side. It was something God declared He would do. It was without condition of any sort. The keeping of it would not depend upon what man might or might not do; it was uncon- BLACKBOARD LESSON
