back. Defy the world. Press on where others flee. —Charles Haddon Spurgeon. 24. The Forerunner of Judgment “And now for a little space grace hath been' showed from the Lord our God” (Ezra 9:8). Bear in mind,’ the time is coming when Christ will be worth more to you than ten thousand worlds like this. . . . You will find, if you read your Bible carefully, that God always precedes judgment with grace. Grace is a forerunner of judgment. When Christ came to plead with the people in Jerusalem, it was their day of grace; they mocked and laughed at Him. Forty years afterward thousands of the people begged that their lives might be spared; and eleven hundred thousand perished in that city. —D. L. Moody. 25. Preparation for Sacrifice “Let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me” (Lk. 9:23). It is the habit of making sacrifices in small things that fits us for mak ing them in great, when it is asked of us. Temper, love of pre-eminence, bodily indulgence, the quick retort, the sharp irony—in checking these let us find our cross and carry it. Or, when the moment comes for some really great service . . . the blinded eyes will not see the occasion of love. —Anthony W. Thorold. 26. Love That Shares “By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments” (1 John 5:2). The possession of grace fills us with very different feelings from the pos session of anything else. A man who

has much money is not very anxious that all the world should be rich. . . . But if you have tasted the grace of the gospel, the irresistible longing of your heart will be—Oh, that all the world might taste its regenerating: waters ¡-—Selected. 27. His Grace, Our Need “I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich” (Rev. 3:18). Surely the happenings of these tre mendous days should be enough to awaken us to the exchange that is still possible of our sticks and straws, our worthless rags of self-righteous ness, for the celestial robe and crown!' The Voice of Love is still pleading, “Buy of me.” He alone has the gifts that meet our need—gold of His love, His grace, Himself, to enrich; white raiment of His own righteousness in which to stand before God; eye salve of His Holy Spirit to give true vision of things seen and unseen. —Mrs. Howard Taylor. 28. Our Boat-Hook “Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense” (Psa. 141:2). . Prayer is a boat-hook, not to draw the land to you, but to draw your boat to the land. It is not a means of tell ing God what He ought to do, but a means of telling Him that we are now . ready to accept what He has promised to give us. Prayer is in great part a recognition of the habitual ways of God’s working and a throwing of our selves into cooperation with those ways and laws.—Selected. 29. The Yoke “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me” (Matt. 11:29). The Lord’s collars are yokes fash ioned for two, and He Himself is al ways one of the two. Thus the sig nificance of our Master’s appeal is this: “Take off that single collar! Ex change it for this yoke, and let Me share the burden with you!” The offering of a yoke is the gracious offer of a partnership. . . . But we decline the partnership; we work in single collar, and our necks are galled. —J. H. Jowett. 30. Portrait, or Character “And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the out side of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness” (Lk. 1J:39). There is a serious thought in the wit of Lowell when he says: “Men are generally more desirous of being im proved in their portraits than in their characters.” - Portraits can be touched up, but characters Jiave to be plowed under by the Spirit of God. —Sunday School Times.
