The mirror was created by welding sixteen stainless steel panels to form a screen, perforated by cut out text, making thirty-two panels, altogether 8m high by 20m long. Its surface is highly interactive — the reflection of a visitor is an intimate engagement with the names of the women being commemorated against the magnificence of the reflected cityscape. The perforated letters shift their function from day to night: during the day sunlit letters follow the curvature of the mirror on the ground, while at night, lit from the interior, the letters glow, creating an entirely different experience. Names as the conceptual driver of homage appear on both the Montréalaises Miroir and on L’Emmarchement . In a balance between presence and absence,the full name of each woman is legible at least once, a small and delicate discovery. Poetic fragments of letters scatter each name, suggesting other possible words and names. Althought the pattern of presence pays tribute to each woman, the freefall of letters is more a general condition of absence. L’EMMARCHEMENT integrates the meadow field on the blade with the linguistic field of names and letters. Conceptually, these elements complete each other. Off-cut letters from the mirror placed on the risers of the steps of L’Emmarchement is a relationship in material and concept, unifying two important objects, and creating two rich and distinct but interrelated experiences. The stairs’ risers create a poetic linguistic field of names and letters from the mirror. The text becomes a field of letters re-purposed, surrounded by the field of perennials and wild grasses. The abstracted letters become a horizon of fragments open to interpretation and reading, materially and formally tied to the mirror. Sitting on the stairs offers a rich, haptic experience with tactile moments of engagement with memory, surrounded by a garden of perennial flowers and grasses. £
