Might we exchange the fleeting nature of trend-driven consumption for deliberately ephemeral installations, reimagining the possibilities of industrial excess? We explore how materials deemed to be at the end of life, whether due to shifting aesthetic trends or the illusion of obsolescence, can take on new forms and purpose if processed with care. This project is embedded with sorority, as we collaborated closely with each other on every aspect to re-establish the notion of an intimate connection between hand and object.

We developed this project as a critique of the consumerist relationship to the design world and the dehumanising systems that sustain it. By returning to a slower, more intentional process of making, we reimagine what contemporary creative practice could become without the urgent need to respond to fleeting trend cycles. Our work resists the pursuit of permanence as the architectural ideal, in favour of cyclical, adaptive design. Through our explorations, we ask: What does impermanence look like through a lens of sustainability?

Clothing storefront light filters through a tonal tapestry, transforming the street. It’s hard to believe that its 1584 fragments were once discarded clothing samples, sitting in garbage bags. This installation is the culmination of a four- month investigation into the relationship between textile artistry and architecture. Both disciplines shape how we inhabit space, serving to shelter, express and define us.

Sewing patterns mirror architectural plans, stitches and seams mirror joints and connections, and they share an ugly truth: the massive, relentless and often invisible production of waste. Craftsmanship unravels when fashion and architecture are absorbed into the machine of industrial production. No longer grounded in place or time, these creative pursuits are stripped of the intimate contribution of the maker. The rapid replication of design principles, regardless of context, results in a severance between maker, consumer and loci .
