What is the strange magnetism of Easter? What powerful, unseen force can drag m illion s of Am ericans to church who attend at no other time? What pulls them to rise long before dawn or sit up all night swathed in blankets to get a seat at a sunrise service? How do you explain this pre-dawn pilgrimage by so many who otherwise sleep in on Sunday morning? It is man’s belief in immortality . . . the strong conviction that lies deeply buried within his heart . . . even though unexpressed—and oft en denied. Man wants to live forever! Three score years and ten are not enough for him. His reach for immortality cannot be completely throttled. Ob viously! “ God has set eternity in our hearts” and life doesn’t make sense without it. If all there is to life is what goes on from the cradle to the grave— there is no answer to the fact that this life rarely if ever satisfies a man: after he has tried everything, heard everything, seen everything, life is still not complete. He achieves his goals one by one but there’s still something lacking. There’s a hun ger—a thirst that seems insatiable. He drives for something more. If this is all there is to life, what do you say to the millions who are bom into the midst of poverty and

misery which dooms them from the start: “ poor sad humanity with no prospect of relief” ? What is the answer for the mul titudes bom deformed or disfigured . . . bom without the physical or mental equipment that is normal? Or what of those who begin life whole and are struck down—muti lated by a dread disease or a tragic accident? What about the keen, sharp, hopeful young men with dreams of empire: hearts filled with legitimate ambition of marriage, family, com fortable home, job or profession, and a place in the community . . . and war comes along and consumes them by the thousands before they even begin to fulfill their dreams? Is life the product of a “ jeering god”—a god who presides over it with the “ chuckling derision of half idiotic mirth”—a god who “watches with derisive scorn the suffering of innocent men” ? Or is there no god? Is life just an accident . . . just for tuitous circumstance that plays hav oc with men? No, thank God! This is not all to life. Jesus Christ rose again—the grave is not the end! “ If only in this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most to be pitied . . . But now Christ has risen from the dead and become the first fruits of them that sleep . . . ” (1 Cor. 15:20). — Perspective
