Dr. Talbot’s Question Box

until we get to heaven; but we know that we can safely pray, then leave the issues with Him. We must not grow discouraged. We must “ pray without ceasing.” “ . . . The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” (See 1 Thes. 5:17; James 5:16.)

2) We must r ememb e r that when we pray according to God’s will, He either gives us what we ask or He gives us something better. His ways are not our ways; and He makes no mistakes. There are many things about God’s ways with us that we shall not fully understand

Heaven and Paradise Q. What did Paul mean by “ the third heaven” and “ paradise” in 2 Corinthians 12:2, 4? A. Paradise and heaven are now one and the same place. In the passage you quote Paul said that he was “ caught up to the third heaven.” Then he added that he was “ caught up into paradise,” evi dently referring to the same event. There are three heavens men tioned in the Bible: first, the atmos pheric heavens where the birds fly and the clouds accumulate; second, the realm of the sun, moon and stars, hence “ the stars of the heav en” ; and third, heaven itself: God’s dwelling place. This is the meaning of 1 Kings 8:27: “ But will God indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee. . . .” This is where Paul was “ caught up” and is now identical with paradise — that is, since the resurrection of Christ when paradise, where the spirits of the Old Testament saints and those who died in Christ before His resurrection resided, became a part of heaven itself. The Lord Jesus said to the thief on the cross, “ . . . Today shalt thou be with me in paradise” (Luke 23: 43). Yet after His resurrection and before His ascension, He said to Mary, “ . . . Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended unto my Fa ther . . (John 20:17). If He had not ascended to the Father, He had not yet returned to heaven. He had gone to paradise which was a different locality from heaven then, but is the same now. Unanswered Prayers Q. Why are our prayers not always answered, even after many years? A. Two things might be said in answer to this question. 1) God tells us in James 4:3, “Ye ask, and re ceive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts [or pleasures].” If we pray for selfish purposes, then we need not expect God to answer our prayers.
