Issue No. 1 2025 Quarterly Magazine

Γ Before Ruth Knight Vos was elected Fraternity international president, she served on the Executive Board for seven years as the NPC delegate and on the Board of Trustees from 1948 to 1954. She represented Alpha Phi at many NPC meetings and conventions, where she served on the college Panhellenics Committee and was an advisor to twenty-seven college Panhellenics near her home. As a collegiate member, Ruth was the president of Beta Gamma chapter (Colorado). One of her daughters, Marcia Vos Moss, is also a Beta Gamma member.

Inside the house, visitors saw a fine bronze Alpha Phi crest, sculpted by Vera Bernhard (Λ), in a niche on the stairway. A large living room with pale blush-pink carpeting and a fireplace with bookshelves on either side was a place for group gatherings or receptions. A grand piano held a prominent position. Over it hung a landscape painting by Seymour Thomas, husband of Helen Blattner Thomas (Λ). Other artwork was to be added, including a portrait of Founder Martha Foote Crowe painted by noted artist Adrian Lamb, husband of Mabel Cooper Haeberly Lamb (Ω). A den, kitchen, dining nook and offices completed the first floor, furnished with many antique pieces from Doris Corbett’s house. Upstairs were two offices—one for Doris and the other shared by the collegiate and alumnae secretaries. Three bedrooms also were located on this floor. In 1964 a new wing was added for the membership department. This Evanston address was Alpha Phi’s international headquarters until 1975.

ORIGINAL CHAPTER HOUSE WINDOWS In January 1962 America’s first sorority house, built in 1886 by Alpha chapter (Syracuse), was razed. The house by then was owned by Syracuse University, although the three original stained-glass windows that added much to its charm were still in place. The windows were a gift from Erastus Franklin Holden, father of Alpha chapter members Eloise Holden Nottingham and

Bertha Holden Gilbert. When the house was demolished, the windows were preserved and presented to the chapter by Syracuse University Chancellor William Tolley, husband of Ruth Canfield Tolley (A). Cleaned and releaded, they were then installed in the Alpha Phi Executive House in Evanston. Dedication of the windows took place in mid-1962, with past International President and Historian Marian Wiley Keys (A) leading a short ceremony. Convention attendees in 1962 were able to view them during a special tour.

Marian Wiley Keys, a long-time Syracuse resident, admires stained glass windows from the original Alpha chapter house at Syracuse. The windows moved to the Fraternity’s headquarters at 634 Foster Street in Evanston in time to be viewed by 1962 Convention attendees.

Artful Windows

America’s first sorority, built in 1886 by Alpha Phi’s Alpha Chapter at Syracuse University, stood as a landmark until January 1962, when it was destroyed. But not everything was lost — its original stained-glass windows survived and now shine once more at Alpha Phi’s Executive Officer in Denver, Colorado. Washed in hues of pink, red, yellow and blue, the windows glow with intricate designs, each one a piece of art. They were gifted to the Fraternity by Erastus Franklin Holden, father of Alpha Chapter members Eloise Holden Nottingham and Bertha Holden Gilbert. The windows first found a home at the Executive Office in Evanston, Illinois, before being relocated to The Mile High City (Denver), where their history and beauty continue to inspire.
