Converter Outlook, 2025: Part II More Opportunities For Growth BY SUSAN RILEY Independent box makers remain true to their values regardless of the political and economic landscape, and by their successful longevity alone this has served them incredibly well over the years. They start 2025 with an inspiring sense of optimism and an unwavering drive to improve whether by operational restructuring or acquisition, efficient technologies, increased capacity, new products and services, enhanc- ing customer relationships and attracting new business. Whatever challenge may or may not come their way — tariffs, price hikes, etc. — they will be ready to face it with a thoughtful strategy, an unsinkable spirit and, as always, a corrugated packaging solution. PACKAGING EXPRESS Colorado Springs, Colorado: Matt Davis reports, “My outlook for 2025 is the same as every year. To illustrate this, I am going to borrow a quote I heard from Coach Prime and when asked what his plan is for the year. He shared, ‘Same Plan as Last Year, put God First in Everything I Do.’ “At Packaging Express, we are optimists and operate with an opportunistic mindset. We are excited for 2025. We expect it to be a record year. We expect that every year. In some ways that kind of thinking is exhausting. It seems that at the beginning of every year, the mountain we have to climb is intimidating. On the other hand, it is invigorating. Challenge accepted! “As a country, we have had a stronger recov- ery than most of the world. We are blessed to live in this country and have the opportunity to make it the best year ever. “At Packaging Express, we always operate from the mindset of cre- ating your own luck. Regardless of what is happening in the world or who is in office, we just need to get up every day and get after it. “I think the new administration brings a sense of calm, as it is not new, it is just more of what we had four years ago. Regardless of what you think of him, I think Trump learned some things in his first four years as President. I think this creates a sense of calmness and optimism, at least from a manufacturing point of view, because we are familiar with this administration. “With labor being a challenge, a challenge to find good people, as a business the incentive is to find efficiencies. We are fortunate at AICC to have associate members with solutions and the willingness to help CONTINUED ON PAGE 22 Matt Davis

Turn Trim Waste into Revenue One Size Never Fits All G.F. Puhl Designs Scrap Systems to Meet YOUR Needs
Our customers have various needs for scrap and dust collection systems based on several factors including building layout, available space for the equipment, distance conveyed, local codes for noise and height as well as air permitting and available operating and maintenance staff. Change the game with a custom-designed system by G.F. Puhl. It can make all the difference. When it comes to trim collection systems, there’s virtually no problem we haven’t solved.
Problem: No room for a scrap system inside the building. Solution: If your building footprint won’t support additional trim waste equipment, go outdoors. Exterior systems like an above-roof or ground-level concentrator will boost your capacity. Problem: No way to monitor the system unless you’re on site. Solution: G.F. Puhl leads the pack with proprietary technology that makes it possible to monitor the system from wherever you are. Request PLC touch screen controls with real-time pressure balancing and real-time remote via your smart phone or computer. G.F. Puhl’s expert engineering team has more than 50 years of combined experience designing, fabricating installing, and commissioning trim and dust collection systems of every kind, including outdoor systems with dual compactors, above roof systems with single or multiple cyclones and balers and below roof screen separator systems. If you’re looking for a vendor that can help you solve the scrap collection puzzle once and for all, contact G.F. Puhl today. 615.230.9500 or sales@gfpuhl.com
Problem: No space for a baler room. No budget for baler room staff. Solution: Try outdoor auger compactors requiring minimal operator interaction. Auger compactors achieve higher compaction than conventional ram compactors with less maintenance and no hydraulic fluid. Dual compactor systems allow continuous running while the waste hauler is changing out the container. Problem: No budget for a new system. Solution: Request a custom system with remanufactured equipment. G.F. Puhl sells remanufactured balers, blowers, separators, filters, and more. The savings can be significant and the warranty adds peace of mind. Problem: Your existing system doesn’t meet codes and the inspector has notified you of a problem with the existing system. Solution: G.F. Puhl’s NFPA trained engineering team designs NFPA and OSHA compliant systems that are as safe as they are durable. Problem: Dust is out of control. Solution: G.F. Puhl systems are designed to minimize the hazards created by ambient dust. Dust briquetters, certified explosion isolation valves, flame front diverters, and other safety features maximize safety.

Carlson Print Group Invests In Koenig & Bauer Rapida 106
How can we differentiate our printing and packaging from our competitors? That’s the most frequently asked ques- tion that Carlson Print Group (CPG) says it receives from its current accounts and potential customers. It’s a request that Carlson’s managers take seriously and work diligently to provide a satisfactory outcome. And in the past year, the CPG team is able to offer a greater variety of new solutions that showcase the company’s award-winning expertise. It was 18 months ago when the CPG decided to invest in a new press. During the discussion, its management team kept their customer’s recurring question top-of-mind. They considered which features would produce inline eye-catching, tactile special effects that would be the most
appealing for its well-known nationwide brand custom- ers. To set itself apart from competition, the company chose LED-UV and double coaters to utilize multiple print techniques, including gloss and matte finishes, soft touch, rough or raised textures, cold foil, and holographic effects. From left, front row, Darren Carlson, CEO; Robert Kwakenat, Pressroom Manager; Earl Guinter, Business Development Manager; and Dan Dallum, President. Back row, Doug Moha- gen, General Manager, and Jeanne Brewer, Controller.
DESIGNS THAT INCREASE PRODUCTION
In partnership with Koenig & Bauer, CPG invested in a new Rapida 106 – an eight-color press with a double coater — that elevates its capabilities with cut- ting-edge technology. After one year of operating the new press, Carlson’s team continues to dream up new ways to show its customers the multitude of innovative, eye-catching print techniques that it can produce with the new press. “Our pressroom now offers an improved press configuration that delivers eight inks along with a double coater producing our proprietary Colour Foil and Cast & Cure applications all in one pass,” says Darren Carlson, CEO, Carlson Print Group. “Traditionally, combining treatments re- quires the piece to be run multiple times through the press. “This has created a higher quality finished product, and improved efficiencies at a more competitive price.” To better demonstrate the various creative possibilities to its customers, CPG built a set of demonstration boxes, each featuring the same striking image of a woman’s face produced with various combinations of coatings and tech- niques that can be applied in one press pass. Box One displays the traditional print method; Box Two shows the dynamics of two coatings; Box Three includes soft-touch coating; Box Four takes creativity to a new level showcasing CPG’s Cast & Cure prismatic effects; and Box Five combines multiple print techniques such as coatings, texture, light, and touch to highlight all of the elements into one piece. The CPG team also equipped the new Rapida with a full drying package including LED lamps that reduces power consumption, can print on many substrates such as plas- tic, decrease drying time, and eliminates distortion. “When using LED-UV there is less heat introduced into the materials which substantially reduces the distortion of the material, particularly plastics,” said Earl Guinter, Busi- ness Development Manager. “LED-UV also improves curing time, which virtually elim- inates wait time going to the next operation. The press is also fitted with traditional UV, which gives us the flexibility to tailor to specific applications, like some specialty coat- ings, where traditional UV is better suited over LED-UV.” For more information, visit carlsonprint.com .
ning to end on every shelf around the country. An in-line color control measures every sheet and controls every 10th sheet. It also reduces waste and makeready time. This enables CPG to produce the widest variety of print applications and offer solutions to their customers to en- sure their product differentiates themselves in the crowd- ed marketplace. To take advantage of those special effects, Carlson specified that its Rapida 106 be equipped with two mod- ules from Eagle Systems: one for cold foil applications and the other for Cast ‘n Cure applications. Applications in- clude packaging, posters, comic book covers, and trading cards that use embellishments to add more collectability. A cold foil unit is installed at the second tower of the Rapida 106 while a second separate Eagle Casting unit is installed on a final station of the press to apply Cast & Cure. This allows CPG to apply cold foil, four-color lithogra- phy plus PMS, and Cast & Cure all in one pass at full press speeds. Both module systems are run inline in one pass on press providing value-added services to CPG’s customers, enhance its quality, and satisfy customer demands. These modules provide CPG with the ability to provide special effects and enhancements for their customers. “The opportunities allow us to apply different embel- lishments/tactile coatings all in one pass,” added Rod Franson, technical sales manager, Carlson Print Group.

with the announcement of upcom- ing 2025 price increases. We feel these announcements are signals to the market but may not actually be the plan. As we all know, box pric- es tend to increase once the RISI index reports that liner and medium buyers are paying more whether demand dictates it or not. This an-

nouncement mirrors a similar proposed increase in Q3 of 2023 for January 2024. That increase eventually went through in March, though there was little evidence, even in the RISI publication article discussing the increase, that prices had in fact moved. “Regardless, many box makers are tied to the index with their vendors and usually end up paying more for raw material when the index reflects these changes. If this in- crease were to take effect, it would result in an 11 percent increase in raw material to box makers. “The integrated producers are not attributing increased demand for their products, or any supply constraints to justify this increase. Instead, they are citing inflation and cost pressures that are driving down margins. We believe this indicates that the ongoing consolidation in North American corrugated market allows the largest producers to dictate prices outside of the normal supply and demand dynamics. Clearly, they feel they are in a strong enough

With acquisitions finalized and behind us, we completed our operational alignment and are now effi- ciently running out of multiple facilities. We look to engage, support and be unapologetically transparent in our interactions with customers. We are looking to solve real, everyday problems and the challenges that come along like: • Cost of Ownership (Boxes are Cheap) • Warehousing (Owning them is expensive) • Inventory Management and Demand intervals (Not having boxes is crippling) “We haven’t seen signs of the market telling us it is ready to fully rebound so like everyone, we are looking to capture market share and grow business in new ways. We’re optimistic our message and approach will influence behaviors within our customer segment and lead to de- sired growth in 2025 as we all look to move on from what was a soft and challenging 2024 business year.” TYOGA CONTAINER Tioga, Pennsylvania: Charlie Frysinger reports, “Wow, what a year to look back on and put behind us with war

ness-friendly and, specifically, more manufacturing-friend- ly. The new administration has talked about re-shoring some critical industries like pharmaceutical, which uses significant packaging materials. In the end, we are com- panies that make stuff, and we need more companies that also make stuff so we can supply them with their corru- gated requirements. The US lost hundreds of thousands of manufacturing jobs over the past four years. If we gain those jobs back plus some, this would be a lift to our in- dustry. “We felt a real slow down from about the first week of October through the November election.
