Multi-National Retailers Move Increasingly To Sustainability BY GREG KISHBAUGH Amazon appears to be making a more serious push toward sustain- ability in the coming year. While it didn’t meet its target of making 100 percent of packaging for its Echo, Kindle, and Fire TV products entirely recyclable, it did reach a rather figure of 90 percent, up from 79 per- cent in 2022.

Esko Announces Sale Of AVT To Porat Itay Holdings Esko, a global provider of integrated soft- ware and hardware solutions that acceler- ate the go-to-market process of packaged goods, has sold its Advanced Vision Tech- nology (AVT) print inspection business to Porat Itay Holdings, Ltd., with an anticipated closing of the transaction in the first quarter of 2025, subject to any customary conditions under applicable local law. The divestiture includes assets, employ- ees, contractual agreements and intellectu- al property specific to AVT. Under its new ownership, AVT will maintain its brand name, identity, and product portfolio. Porat Itay is a private company based in Israel, founded by Roy Porat and Yaron Itay. Roy Porat had previously held the role of president, AVT from 2020 until 2022, and Yaron Itay has built and led several industrial technology companies in Israel.

Presenting a focus on reducing plastic bags and wrapping both inside and outside of the product box, Amazon also indicated that it was incorporating far more recycled material in packaging for these products, using unbleached boxes to produce a kraft look. Plastic air pillows were also scrapped by Amazon in October, with recycled paper filler being used to protect shipped goods instead. Further, the retailer stated it had reduced its average per-shipment packaging weight by nearly half (43 percent) since 2015. Google has also moved to take plastic out of its packaging. As of August 2024, Google succeeded in making all packaging for its new devices — including the Fitbit, Nest, and Pixel lineups — without the use of plastic. Savvy Consumers Research from Diversitech Global finds that consumers are increas- ingly savvy as to environmental issues, particularly concerning the products they aim to purchase. Some of the more notable findings pro- duced by its report include:
