Safety training

GWO Basic Safety Training / V19 02052025

The instructor shall:

Demonstrate common visual and audible signals used in W2W systems (e.g. traffic lights, stop signals, brace commands) using printed visuals, video clips, or classroom simulations.

Facilitate an interactive exercise where participants interpret signals and decide on the appropriate behavioral response.

Highlight that different gangway systems may use slightly different signals and emphasise the need to clarify unfamiliar ones during operations.

The participants shall:

Practice interpreting signals and alarms in guided exercises and match them with the correct behavioral response.

Discuss potential differences between systems and outline steps they would take if a signal is unclear.

Reflect on how quick and correct responses to signals enhance overall transfer safety.

ELEMENT 8.3 - RISKS AND UNSAFE BEHAVIOUR

Learning objective:

53) The participants c an Describe the risks associated with unsafe/safe behavior during operations, including hazards , transport of cargo/tool, distraction, and movement . (Knowledge, basic level)

The instructor shall:

Present examples of incidents and near -misses related to W2W transfers, including case studies that show risks such as distraction, slips/trips/falls, tool handling, and automatic disconnection.

Facilitate a group analysis activity where participants identify

behaviors that contributed to the

incidents and propose safer alternatives.

Guide a discussion on how transferee actions directly influence the overall safety of the transfer.

The participants shall:

Analyse case examples to identify unsafe behaviours and describe how they

increased risk during

transfer.
