A New Year’s Reality Check The 40 Percent Retirement Risk No One Talks About

The start of a new year is usually filled with optimism, fresh goals, and big plans for the future. However, a less comfortable reality deserves attention. Recent research uncovered a striking statistic: People face roughly a 40 percent chance of one or more major life events occurring right before or shortly after retirement, becoming seriously ill, developing dementia, or even passing away. It is an unsettling statistic, especially as we look ahead to a new year. The research revealed just how common these outcomes can be. While this is not an uplifting fact to start the year with, it is important to take the discussion a step further. There are actions individuals can take to reduce the likelihood of these events and increase their chances of maintaining health and longevity during retirement. The first and most foundational factors are diet and exercise. These are concepts people hear about repeatedly, yet few truly take them to heart. An article by Dr. Andrew Huberman, a neuroscientist and professor at Stanford University, emphasizes a simple framework for healthy eating ("Diet & Nutrition," Huberman Lab, 2025 ). He suggests focusing on consuming meat, fish, eggs, fruits, and vegetables. Notably, none of these foods are man-made or come from a can or a box. This approach is not presented as a miracle diet, but rather as a framework for eating clean, whole foods while avoiding processed foods. Exercise is equally important, though often more difficult to maintain. Weather conditions, fatigue, and soreness can all make regular exercise challenging. One effective way to build consistency is by exercising with a partner. Having someone else involved

creates accountability and helps ensure individuals not only show up but also engage in meaningful workouts.

Further research also shows that having a sense of purpose plays a critical role in longevity. [1] Purpose can come from goals, hobbies, and activities that provide structure and meaning. Having something to work toward gives people something to look forward to, which can positively impact both mental and physical health. As Elsa Bonstein often says, without a dream, a dream can never come true. The final key element is having confidence in the future. A written financial plan is essential in creating that confidence. For clients of CAPTRUST Alexandria, this plan is already in place. The reassurance that comes from knowing they have a clear financial road map can significantly reduce stress. Lower stress levels are closely linked to better overall health and well-being. As we move into 2026, it is worth reflecting on what steps will be taken to ensure a long, healthy life, one that allows for the enjoyment of family, children, and grandchildren. Eating well, exercising with a friend, building and regularly reviewing goals or a bucket list, and integrating these habits into a comprehensive financial, retirement, and life plan can make a meaningful difference.

Good luck in 2026!

Staying Engaged After Retirement

OVER THE HILL AND LOVING IT HOBBIES THAT HELP YOU PAUSE WITH PURPOSE Life is a marathon. For the first few decades of our lives, everything is go-go-go. We constantly look ahead to the next stage of life and wonder what we need to do to reach it, whether it’s finishing high school, earning a college degree, or moving up in our industry. As we settle down and start families, things slow down slightly, but life remains chaotic. Many tire of the hustle culture as they approach that over the hill age. They’ll start looking for a quieter lifestyle, ideally as part of their retirement. This way of life calls on us to slow down and shift our habits to align with what matters most. One of the best moves we can make to incorporate this idea of slower living fully is participating in hobbies that allow us time for introspection and reflection.

The Case for Part-Time Work For many people, retirement once meant a clean break from work. One day, you were busy with meetings and deadlines, and the next, you were officially done. Today, retirement looks very different. More and more retirees are choosing to work part time, not because they have to, but because they want to. Like most retirement decisions, this choice comes with both advantages and trade-offs worth considering. Financial Perks One of the most obvious benefits of working part time in retirement is the additional income. Even a modest paycheck can reduce the strain on retirement savings and help extend how long those funds last. This extra income may support everyday expenses, cover travel costs, or provide peace of mind. In some cases, it can also allow retirees more flexibility in deciding when to claim Social Security or how much to withdraw from investment accounts. Purpose, Routine, and Mental Engagement Beyond the financial benefits, part-time work can add structure and meaning to retirement life. After decades of having a set routine, unlimited free time can feel overwhelming. A part-time role creates consistency, keeps the mind active, and allows retirees to continue using their skills. Whether through consulting, mentoring, or trying something entirely new, many find continued work to be fulfilling. Social Connections Leaving the workforce often means losing regular social interaction. Part-time work can help replace that connection by providing opportunities to engage with coworkers, clients, or customers. These interactions can reduce feelings of isolation and contribute to overall emotional well-being, especially for those adjusting to a quieter pace of life. Time and Flexibility Despite the benefits, part-time work does come with compromises. One of retirement’s greatest rewards is freedom, and even a flexible job requires some sacrifice of that time. Travel plans may need to be scheduled carefully, and spontaneous days with family or friends can be harder to manage. Potential Financial Considerations Additional income can also affect taxes, Medicare premiums, or Social Security benefits, depending on individual circumstances. Without proper planning, the financial advantages of working part time may be smaller than expected, which is why it’s important to review how added income fits into a broader financial strategy.

Here are three accessible and simple hobbies that allow us to focus on what matters most.

Walking There’s something magical about being outside in nature. Walking is a great way to add extra movement to your day, connect with nature, and refocus your thoughts. While you can walk anywhere, it’s best to get out in the wilderness, where distractions are in short supply. Arts & Crafts If you can find an activity that speaks to your artistic side, you’ll gain a new way to express yourself and center your thoughts. The best part of arts and crafts is that there are activities for everyone. You can journal, write short stories, paint awe-inspiring landscapes, knit beautiful pieces of clothing, sculpt something from clay, make soap, or even work on your calligraphy. Baking Those who want to lose themselves in thought while creating something delicious should head to the kitchen. Baking is a great way to create something from nothing while relieving stress, developing patience, and expressing yourself creatively. All you need to get started are a few ingredients, a recipe, and the willingness to bake!

THE EXPENSIVE SIDE OF ‘YES’ FOMO FUELS OVERSPENDING

We all know the feeling: A friend posts that dreamy beach photo, someone’s heading to a music festival, or you see the perfect brunch video pop up on your feed, and suddenly there’s this itch, “What did I miss out on?” That whisper has a name: FOMO, or the fear of missing out, and when it nudges you to open your wallet, it becomes FOMO spending. FOMO spending is when the urge to partake in experiences like concerts, travel, and social getaways overrides your financial boundaries. It’s not just about wanting “stuff”; it’s about wanting in. The problem is that those desires often come with a huge price tag. Studies suggest this isn’t just anecdotal. Empower’s research found that 51 percent of Americans admit they’ve made purchases or investments sparked by

FOMO, with many pointing to experiences like dining out and traveling. When social media becomes a nonstop highlight reel, we compare ourselves and our bank accounts to a filtered ideal. The stakes are real. The 2019 Modern Wealth Survey sponsored by Charles Schwab revealed that more than a third of Americans admit their spending is influenced by what friends are doing, often leading them to exceed their means. In an experimental study, researchers found that FOMO significantly increased the likelihood of impulse purchases even with budget constraints in place. That tells us FOMO isn't just temptation; it’s a powerful nudge against rational behavior. Experiences are powerful. They build memories, foster connections, and bring joy. But when every experience becomes

“must-do,” the balance breaks. You end up chasing the next event, trip, or spending spree, and your long-term goals take a back seat. You might skip saving, rack up credit card debt, or delay retirement goals all in pursuit of that next “memorable” moment. Here’s the catch: Living for the moment is fine until that moment’s price tag pushes your future out of reach. The challenge is to be intentional. Deciding where you should spend your energy (and money) gives you permission to skip the rest. The thrill of one impulsive decision fades fast; the peace of financial security lasts. If FOMO is the voice telling you to just go for it, try asking yourself: Will I thank myself in five years for this? Strike a balance between living fully today and protecting tomorrow. That’s how you stop FOMO from bankrupting your joy.

Ooh La La Luxe Lifestyle TREAT YOURSELF LIKE A PARISIAN EVERY DAY

Savor life’s little luxuries. In Paris, the pace moves fast, but the people live in the present, slowing down to enjoy the simple pleasures of life, such as people- watching at a café, taking a break to read, or simply enjoying a light breeze. Savor the little things and give yourself technology breaks to enjoy the moment you are in. Luxury is synonymous with Paris, but you don’t need a huge budget to treat yourself. Instead of buying a designer handbag or Chanel suit, splurge on nicer sheets or a tasty pastry. Learn, explore, repeat often. Parisians appreciate imperfections and lead authentic lives, prioritizing joy over self-criticism. Acculturate yourself by visiting museums, enjoying art often, and staying up to date on current affairs. You want to ensure you always have something interesting to discuss at a party or gathering. In conversation, develop your own witty style, expressing your opinions clearly and inviting others to join in. You can never have too many books on the shelf because they will grow your knowledge base and are excellent conversation starters. Don your best beret, pour yourself a café au lait, and get ready to add a little Parisian elegance to your routines.

Ooh la la! While we can’t all wake up to the twinkle of the Eiffel Tower or stroll past a boulangerie on the way to work, we can bring a little touch of Parisian flair to our everyday lives. From savoring the simple things (like delicious croissants) to adding some je ne sais quoi to your home, you can bring the best of French lifestyle trends into your world, no matter how many miles are

between you and the City of Lights.

Cherish your cozy chez-soi. Most Parisian apartments are small but feel like elegant chateaus. Embrace the maximalist style and add your own unique touches to your space. Parisian home design is about developing something uniquely you and filling your space with your favorite things and comforts. Pops of color and pleasant fragrances are French staples, so add fresh flowers to your table or find candles with delightful aromas. Bonus points if the candle is a French classic like the popular Diptyque brand.
