A s technology advances and evolves, defense contractors must adapt quickly to help their clients succeed in an ever-changing landscape. Verus Technology Group, located in Leesburg, Virginia, aims to do just that through SkyView, a line of security sensors made to track and detect unmanned aircraft systems.

“We are developing products in the family of what is known as counter unmanned aircraft systems,” said John Abbey, founder and president of Verus. “Drones are used for good reasons — everything from videography to inspections, to supporting law enforcement, both professionally and by consumers, for doing anything that you want to do up high, with high-end still and video cameras,” Abbey said. “And with that, they can potentially be a threat. They can be weaponized.” This is where Verus and SkyView come in, and why cutting-edge expertise is so important. “[Drones] can be used to surveil security operations; they can be used to look at sensitive sites, any number of things,” Abbey said. “In the most nefarious case, they can be used against personnel deployed in war environments. The technology is constantly changing, and

our job is to make sure that we efficiently build solutions in our products and stay current with the potential threat of unmanned aircraft systems.” While you can purchase SkyView commercially, Verus also contracts with federal clients like the Army, Navy, Air Force and more. With nearly a decade of experience under their belt, Verus offers product support and training in addition to their sensors to keep their clients up to date on their technology and the expanding world of unmanned aircraft. While there are only six people at Verus’ location in Leesburg, the space had to be flexible in order to provide several different services for Verus employees. “Around 50 percent of our space is tradi- tional office space,” Abbey said. “The other portion is assembly and manufac- turing. We do prototyping, 3D printing and final assembly, which is stitching everything together.”

Verus also ships its products from this location, so having a space that allowed them to fulfill all of these functions made their partnership with St. John Properties important.

The biggest driver was that the Leesburg location was empty space where we could do a bespoke, custom design that exactly met our requirements,” Abbey said. “We gave them a design of what we wanted, and St. John implemented it.
