BEFORE

AFTER

From an old car garage to a top-spec bathroom showroom: we interviewed Facilities Manager, Phill Walker, to find out how the incredible transformation happened.

Did you have any personal challenges?

Continuity. Making sure there was always another job to move on to. I was planning 3-4 weeks in front of everyone else because, when you’ve got a team coming in every day, you need to make sure they’ve all got work to do. The last thing you want is to finish one task and then discover that you’ve not got enough material to work on another. So that was a challenge - especially as some of the suppliers had longer lead times than expected.

BEFORE

Such a big project, Phill - tell us a bit about the build process.

Yes, definitely a big project but hugely rewarding. I suppose, to begin with, we had various issues to contend with from the outset. This included challenges with the floor, drainage, as well as making sure we had all the right materials in at the right time.

Do you have a favourite part of the showroom?

Did this cause complications with the build?

I think the entrance. As you come into the main showroom, you’re greeted with the desk, the really nice ceiling, and the lighting is just right. In terms of the pods, the first one on the left is one of my favourites. Although, I have bought a vanity unit from another pod. It looks a bit Scandinavian.

AFTER

When I started to think about how we’d transform this space, I realised we had a lot of alterations to make. This included removing internal walls and the old suspended ceiling. Then, the concrete floor had to be prepared and over-screeded. This was work that wasn’t anticipated and added time to the job.

What’s the next big project for you?

BEFORE

DURING

To further streamline our operations and make working - and the shopping experience for the customer - even better. We have big plans for the yard, so watch this space.

Did it take longer than you thought?

Yes it did. The internal work didn’t start properly until the floor had fully dried. It was only then that we could start to tile the main shop floor area, which took a number of weeks to complete. Once this was done we could start erecting the pods and finish off all of the internal work.

Were there any other surprises?

We had to re-instate some of the drainage in the car park which we weren’t expecting to do.
