THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 25 2:00 PM - 2:50 PM | ROOM 202 AB Cannabinoid-Rich Hemp Essentials: Quality, pK, and Dosing Considerations Robert Menardi, DVM This session will address current concepts regarding cannabinoid-rich hemp products. With the rise in hemp product use, and advances in current knowledge of pharmacokinetics in pets, it is apparent that there are significant differences between species, making bioavailability and dosing of paramount importance in determining therapeutic value. Today’s hemp products exhibit wide variations in quality and composition, all with implications for clinical effectiveness and practicality. Practitioners should know about quality control and follow the AAVSB guidelines for selecting products. A full understanding of a certificate of analysis when choosing a product, regardless of the plant-based product they are providing their clients, is essential to good medicine. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 25 3:00 PM - 3:50 PM | ROOM 202 AB Don’t Say Neigh to Cannabinoids: A Closer Look at Horses and Ruminants Robert Menardi, DVM Joseph Wakshlag, DVM PhD DACVIM (Nutrition) DACVSMR This session will examine the use of CBD + CBDA rich hemp products in horses and other hind and foregut fermenters, showing that dosing is very different between species. The utility in horses has not been well established at this juncture however the pharmacokinetics are becoming well worked out showing that dosing may be critical. The current research is suggesting that full spectrum hemp products may have some utility in comfort and behavior and that many of the current products on the market are grossly underdosing. Further research in the ruminant is ongoing related to pharmacokinetics and many foregut fermenting species like goats, giraffes and moose have been treated successfully. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 26 8:00 AM - 8:50 AM | EXHIBIT HALL D Canine and Feline Heartworm Updates: Dirofilaria
Diagnostic Dilemmas Christine Garrett, DVM
This case-based session will summarize key clinical aspects of canine and feline heartworm. Geographic prevalence in dogs and cats, screening test recommendations, along with the complexities of diagnosis, prevention needs, and pet-owner communication tips will be discussed. The recently updated American Heartworm Society (AHS) and Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) guidelines will be reviewed. By the end of the session participants should feel prepared to incorporate the AHS and CAPC guidelines into their day-to-day practice recommendations, and communicate the importance of heartworm awareness to canine and feline pet parents.
