LIBRARY INFO
Native American Heritage Month
Belonging. What does it really mean—and what does the library have to do with it? At the Anne Arundel County Public Library, we believe belonging is more than just being welcomed—it’s about being seen, valued and included. In these increasingly divisive political times, when many people feel pushed aside, silenced or even terrorized simply for who they are, the library stands as a place of refuge and respect. Everyone Belongs at the Library
BOARD of TRUSTEES OFFICERS Damita McDonald, Chair Lonni K. Summers, Vice Chair Accommodations for individuals with disabilities will be provided for library- sponsored programs upon request to the branch manager at least one week in advance of the program date. We advance diversity, inclusion, and belonging for our staff, customers, partners, and the whole community to create an equitable Library and society. We are committed to using our resources and partnerships to improve the lives of people of every race, ethnicity, culture, faith, age, sexual orientation, ability, socio-economic status, and gender. ---- LIBRARY CLOSINGS Labor Day: Monday, September 1 Thanksgiving Day: Thursday, November 27 Native American Heritage Day: Friday, November 28 Sunday After Thanksgiving: Sunday, November 30 EQUITY STATEMENT

As a community connector, we use our resources and partnerships to educate, enrich, and inspire the lives of all people. That means creating spaces where everyone feels safe and supported—regardless of background, identity or beliefs. Whether you’re here to explore new ideas, seek connection or simply find peace in a welcoming environment, the library is here for you. This commitment is reflected in the wide variety of programs we offer throughout the year. In this issue of Library Happenings, we celebrate Native American Heritage Month (page 3) and Hispanic Heritage Month (pages 12-13) with programs honoring the cultures, histories and accomplishments of these vibrant communities. We also recognize Transgender Awareness Week with resources and events that provide healing, support and celebration of transgender individuals and their allies. Additionally, we are proud to celebrate the sacrifices of veterans and military families (page 16). Through inclusive programming, diverse collections and compassionate staff, we’re working every day to make sure everyone who walks through our doors knows that the library is a place where all belong.

Visitors to the Brooklyn Park, Crofton or Linthicum libraries may have noticed something new outside the buildings- vibrant Art Exchange Boxes installed to spark imagination, expression and creativity within the community. These boxes were created in partnership with the Chesapeake Arts Center as part of an initiative to bring art into public spaces during Anne Arundel Arts Month. Brooklyn Park Library Branch Manager Kt Zawodny helped launch the project and Crofton Library Branch Manager Rachael Troianos Halbig quickly embraced the opportunity to extend simple concept to "take or leave" art and art supplies. The community's response has been overwhelmingly positive, with frequent visitors exploring the box and contributing their own creations. The Crofton box recently featured a weaving loom, colorful thread, a mini painted canvas, a decorated box, leftover art supplies and even a whimsical fuzzy creature made from pom-poms. “We hope the community will feel inspired to make art themselves after seeing what others have made for them to enjoy,” Troianos Halbig said. “We also hope the art in the boxes helps people feel more connected to others in their community.” With its ever-changing contents and open invitation for participation, the Art Exchange Boxes are a symbol of connection, creativity and the joy of sharing art with others. the initiative to the Crofton Library.
