Visitors to the Brooklyn Park, Crofton or Linthicum libraries may have noticed something new outside the buildings- vibrant Art Exchange Boxes installed to spark imagination, expression and creativity within the community. These boxes were created in partnership with the Chesapeake Arts Center as part of an initiative to bring art into public spaces during Anne Arundel Arts Month. Brooklyn Park Library Branch Manager Kt Zawodny helped launch the project and Crofton Library Branch Manager Rachael Troianos Halbig quickly embraced the opportunity to extend simple concept to "take or leave" art and art supplies. The community's response has been overwhelmingly positive, with frequent visitors exploring the box and contributing their own creations. The Crofton box recently featured a weaving loom, colorful thread, a mini painted canvas, a decorated box, leftover art supplies and even a whimsical fuzzy creature made from pom-poms. “We hope the community will feel inspired to make art themselves after seeing what others have made for them to enjoy,” Troianos Halbig said. “We also hope the art in the boxes helps people feel more connected to others in their community.” With its ever-changing contents and open invitation for participation, the Art Exchange Boxes are a symbol of connection, creativity and the joy of sharing art with others. the initiative to the Crofton Library.
