CULTS CRITIQUE

youshouldknow!

by B eity Bruecheri

I n q u ir ie s h a v e reached this desk with regard to a cult called The Founding Chu r ch of Scientology World-Wide, with headquarters in Washington, D.C. and branches in Los Angeles, Detroit, New York, San Diego, Dallas, Seattle, Miami; Lon don, ' England, Victoria, Australia; Capetown, South Africa; Auckland, New Zealand; Paris, France, and Western Germany. A request for lit erature brought a number of pamph lets from which I quote the follow ing: “The Founding Church of Scientol ogy was officially constituted in 1955, in Washington, D.C. It is a church where one can go to feel better about life. It is non-sectarian which means that a Scientologist may belong to and participate in the activities of other churches. . . . Scientology is a religious science . . . a person does not have a soul, but is a spiritual being. . . . In Scientology a true psy chology has been created in the tradi tion of Gautama Buddha and St. Thomas Aquinas. . . . Scientology cannot be considered other than a religion because its entire work con sists in freeing of the spirit. . . . Scien tology is entirely the creation of one man, Dr. L. Ron Hubbard. . . . There is no code of conduct other than that expressed in the Codes and Creed.. . . The confessional espect . . . is not a ritual. It is the clearing up of a per son’s honesty with himself” (What is Scientology?). “A Scientology auditor is an or dained minister in the Founding Church of Scientology. . . . An Audi tor hears confessions in such a way to make vital improvements in the lives of those- receiving auditing. . . . Any person receiving auditing is called a Preclear, which means any person who is not yet Clear [!]. A Clear is someone who has attained through Scientology auditing, the state of knowingness of himself along the eight dynamics . . . from self, through family, groups, mankind, all life forms, the physical universe, the spiritual universe, to Supreme Being” (Ability). This is another of those cults given to ontology, science of being. It con tains no reference to the Lord Jesus Christ, His atonement and His salva tion. Any relation it has to genuine science or correct use of English is coincidental! Its followers walk in darkness. .
