“ W H E N DOES LIFE BEGIN, M A R K ? ” W Mother posed this question having no idea her son had recently heard a message on the subject. “ I know it’s not when you’re bom. When I went with Daddy to that Men’s Fellowship, the speaker said life begins when you become a Chris tian.” “What kind of life is it?” “ I guess it’s spiritual.” “ Do you think that spiritual life can affect the physical?” “What do you mean?” “When we become C h r is tia n s , should this make us live better each day?” “Yes, it should. But I don’t think it always does,” which was quite a mouthful from an 11-year-old. Mother had reason to remember this conversation again. Mark de cided to stop studying violin. Just like that. Reason? “ It’s no pleasure to practice.” A cold shiver swept over Mother. How subtle Satan is. Even an 11- year-old looks for pleasure as the criterion by which to decide where to expend himself. Paul wrote that people in “ the last days . . . [shall be] t r a it o r s , heady, highminded, lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God” (II Tim. 3 :4 ). One fact emerges from the philo sophical war raging around the con cept of pleasure. That fact is moti vation. Noble purpose can make even hard work a pleasure. Nor is pleas ure an ultimate. All who have expe rienced pure pleasure have learned that the next step beyond is JOY. In eternity past the councils of God planned that the Son should “be made in the likenes#o f man” for the joy of restoring sinful men to fel lowship with God. We have come to a new year. It cannot be “as usual” ; there are too many issues at stake. For the believ er poised on the threshold of Christ’s return, the New Year means JOY, regardless of circumstances. Do you want a good start on the year? Go next door right now and share that joy with your neighbor. Life begins with the JOY of the LORD.
