FOCUSING ON HOPE AND GRATITUDE

Hello there! It’s been a bumpy couple months, hasn’t it? We’ve been feeling a bit overwhelmed with everything going on, so rather than using this space to add to that feeling, we want to focus on the gratitude we feel for the positive things in our lives, starting with you. Through another April, we had the honor of helping you with your taxes.Thank you for your continued support, and thank you for keeping us busy! We truly are thankful we have plenty to do because it means we’ve helped make the tax season easier for so many people. We’re grateful that we get to help you with your tax planning, preparation, and strategy. Hopefully, you'll feel a little bit lighter as you go into May. After all, spring is a time of renewal.Thinking about it, it seems fitting that Mother’s Day is celebrated each year in early spring, the time of growth and rebirth. Our mothers give us life and the best chance to succeed by nurturing us, letting us make mistakes, and catching us when we fall. Most of all, when the time comes, our mothers let us go out into the world on our own, knowing that we are capable of finding our path. Mother’s Day is dedicated to them because motherhood is not an easy role. Often, as kids we

aren’t aware of the sacrifices they make for us, and it’s only when we have children of our own that we fully grasp the gifts our mothers have given us. Mother’s Day is a reminder to show some extra gratitude to the people who raised and nurtured us. It’s a heroic role and definitely not an easy one. Mothers are also people who go into space, people who explore forests and oceans, and people who direct award-winning movies. Of course, we know them primarily as our mothers, but it’s good to remember that they’re also individuals who have amazing stories of their own. This month, we encourage you to ask your mother a bit about her story.

I’ve also heard it said, and I think it’s worth noting, that a person doesn’t have to have given birth to fulfill the role of a mother. So, however you do it, take a “We truly are thankful we have plenty to do because it means we’ve helped make the tax season easier for so many people.” moment this month to celebrate these special people in your life and thank them for what they’ve given you. Have a happy Mother’s Day and stay safe, -John and Jeff Zufall

As you know, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, our Annual Shred Day will be rescheduled to a future date.

TACKLE ALLERGIES THIS SPRING

The Storied History Behind Our Favorite Power Accessory WHY DO BUSINESS PEOPLEWEAR TIES? In his 1975 book “Dress for Success,” John T. Molloy wrote, "Show me a man's ties and I'll tell you who he is or who he is trying to be.” A necktie is just a strip of fabric, but Molloy was right about its symbolic power. For centuries, putting on a tie has meant the wearer is getting down to business, and that sentiment lingers despite Steve Jobs’ black turtleneck and Mark Zuckerberg’s gray T-shirt. Though just 6% of men wear ties to work daily according to a Gallup poll, neckties are still an accessory of choice for lawyers, politicians, bankers, and executives — regardless of gender. Plus, many formal occasions require them. But why did people start wearing neckties in the first place, and why do neckties have staying power? As it turns out, answers to both questions are up for debate. THEWHO BEHINDTHE DEBUT According to The Washington Post, the modern necktie has three different origin stories. One tale credits Chinese soldiers from the third century B.C., who were immortalized in terra cotta wearing neck scarves to protect “the source of their strength, their Adam's apples.” Another story gives the nod to Roman legionaries, who wrapped cloths around their necks to stave off wind and rain in the second century. But the most popular version dates the tie back to 1636 when King Louis XIV of France hired a group of Croatian mercenaries who wore neck wraps to protect their throats from weather and sword slashes. Over the years, those protective strips of cloth became suave status symbols. THEWHY BEHINDTHETIE No one knows for certain why ties stuck around. Maybe yesterday’s soldiers have become today’s CEOs battling in the boardroom, or perhaps wearing a tie is one of the few chances for a businessperson to show off their unique style. Over the years, tie fashion has ranged from the subdued, skinny ties of the ‘50s to the 6-inch-wide psychedelic prints of the ‘60s. Today, ties can be knit, leather, or even rubber. Increasingly, though, they’re left sitting in the back of the closet, forgotten along with their fascinating history. If you want to learn more about ties and even how to tie one, check out Tie-a-Tie.net.

With These 3 Strategies

Spring has officially sprung. Grass is growing, flowers are blooming, and longer days are here again. And while the arrival of spring is a cause for celebration, for outdoor enthusiasts who suffer from seasonal allergies, the season is bittersweet. For many, this time of the year is characterized by stuffy noses, burning eyes, and sneezing. But according to WebMD, even severe allergy sufferers can enjoy the outdoors without worrying about allergies by taking the following precautions. WATCH POLLEN COUNTS. You can usually find information about local pollen levels on the internet or in your local newspaper. If pollen counts are through the roof, consider hitting the indoor gym instead of running outside. In general, pollen counts are highest on warm and breezy mornings and lowest when it is cool and rainy. Plan your outdoor pursuits accordingly. CHANGE IMMEDIATELY AFTER SPENDING TIME OUTDOORS. If you suffer from seasonal allergies but still love to exercise outdoors, build a habit of showering and changing immediately after coming back inside. While you were out crushing that 30-mile bike ride, pollen was slowly accumulating in your hair and on your clothes. And while 30 minutes of outdoor exercise will, according to WebMD, completely coat your nasal membrane with allergens, showering and laundering your clothing will limit your exposure while indoors. MEDICATE, MEDICATE, MEDICATE. Depending on the severity of your allergies, medication, not prevention, will likely provide the best relief available. Every person is different, so ask your doctor about the best medicine for you, and make sure you understand how you’re supposed to use it before dismissing its efficacy. Some allergy medicines can take as long as three weeks to reach their full effectiveness.

A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: The Stock Market Before, During, and After Pandemics

swine flu, and MERS) and their effects on stock market behavior, the S&P 500 was positive in 11 of the 12 cases for the six-month period following the start of each outbreak. The average price return was 8.8%. In 9 of the 11 cases, the 12-month change of the S&P 500 index following the start of the pandemic was positive, with an average price return of 13.6%. For most of the cases, an initial dip in the market at the time of the outbreak precipitated an eventual rise six and 12 months out. As this data shows us, being in it for the long term is typically the best strategy. It’s impossible to know exactly what will happen in the coming years and months, and each situation is different. It’s also easy to feel panicked and react accordingly. But looking at historical data from similar situations can remind us that as bad as things can feel, they do bounce back.We do recover from setbacks, and we will rise again. As quickly as this all happened, it will subside, and in the meantime, we are here for you. Reach out to us and let us know how we can help you.

A global event like the one we are experiencing currently with COVID-19 causes us to change our routine behavior. Instead of meeting with friends for dinner, we set up a Zoom call and have a virtual dinner date. Instead of going to a concert, we might rock out to the band’s livestream online. Of course, as our behavior changes, there are ripple effects for our society. When it comes to the stock market, it’s easy to expect the worst. While it’s impossible to predict the overall financial impact COVID-19 will have, it can be helpful to look at what we do know: the stock market’s performance through several of the world’s previous pandemics and outbreaks. According to a graph put together by First Trust, which looked at 12 pandemics over the last 40 years (including SARS, Zika, bird flu,
