SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Community Energy Pathways (formerly Community Energy South), established in 2018, works with local authorities, community energy groups, industry leaders and central government to support local communities to become resilient by reducing their energy use and creating locally funded community energy. To do this, the company builds partnerships to support volunteers and locally led community energy organisations to provide trusted Community Energy Pathways

The Lost Gardens of Heligan

The Lost Gardens of Heligan is a historic garden, exemplar for restoration and beacon for regenerative practices. In 2024, it became the first garden visitor attraction in the UK to achieve B Corp status. Lost to the brambles of time following the outbreak of the First World War, Heligan was re-awakened in 1990 to

support and advice in the heart of local

communities. The result creates increased local resilience and empowers communities to be involved with the future of energy, new job opportunities and local green economies that will deliver a sustainable low carbon future for us all.

become Europe’s largest garden restoration project. For more than 30 years it has been one of south west England’s most popular and well-loved visitor attractions. Today, Heligan’s 200 acres are a paradise for explorers, plant lovers, garden romantics and those looking to immerse themselves in a unique slice of living history. Heligan is home to a working farm of heritage livestock and is the only accredited Rare Breeds Survival Trust Farm Park in the south west. The estate is managed to optimise biodiversity and accommodate the reintroduction of wildlife. Heligan has reintroduced beavers, glow worms and water voles and has plans to reintroduce red squirrels.

The CEP team – inspiring future sustainable communities

The company’s vision and future plans are to continue to grow the sector to ensure that every community across England has access to locally trusted energy champions, building a low carbon and fair sustainable future.

The Lakes Free Range Egg Company

Set up in 1997 by David and Helen Brass, The Lakes Free Range Egg Company (The Lakes) is honoured to receive the King’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development. This accolade is a testament to the company’s pioneering approach, passion and innovation, leading the highest standards of animal welfare, sustainability and environmental provenance in free range and organic egg production. From the outset, The Lakes has championed the belief that planting trees enhances the welfare of free range hens. This philosophy has driven the company to become one of the UK’s largest specialist free range egg producer/packers. Its approach is profitable, sustainable and replicable, setting an industry benchmark. David Brass says, “We have a proud history of trailblazing in the field and remain the only egg producer/packer with bespoke Biodiversity Action Plans (BAPs) for all our ranges and those of our producers. This initiative has resulted in the planting 300,000-plus trees and shrubs across 6,000-plus acres of UK farmland. It brings substantial benefits, like carbon sequestration, production efficiencies, habitat restoration, improved soil health and ammonia reabsorption, thus significantly enhancing local biodiversity. “As members of the UK Soy Manifesto, we source

100% of our soy from areas free of deforestation and conversion and actively support this transition across the UK. In a groundbreaking achievement, we became the first in the industry to reach Scope 1 & 2 carbon emission net zero. Our recent installation of battery storage technology allows us to operate as an electrical island, providing 100% of our energy needs and underscoring our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and promoting renewable energy. “Innovation is at the heart of all we do. We developed the UK’s first dark brooding chick- rearing system, which cuts energy consumption by an impressive 85%. We developed and launched ‘BirdBox,’ a world-first technology, designed to improve hen welfare and producer margins. This real-

time data capture system, costing £2 million-plus to develop, provides valuable insights to farmers, enhancing operational efficiency and animal welfare. “For over 25 years, we have been dedicated to sharing best practices with internationally recognised organisations and their producers. This ensures continuous improvement in sustainability and reinforces our position as the industry leader.” THE LAKES FREE RANGE EGG COMPANY Stainton, Penrith, CA11 0EE Tel: 01768 890460 • info@lakesfreerange.co.uk www.lakesfreerange.co.uk @lakesfreerange @thelakesfreerange @ lakesfreerange The Lakes Free Range Egg Company
