Shearwell Data is a family-owned farming business based within the Exmoor National Park in Somerset. It provides farmers with a range of products and services that enhance the speed, accuracy, traceability and efficiency of animal identification. Its visual and electronic identification (EID) livestock ear tags are used on farms across the UK and globally, and are renowned for their durability, ease of application, retention rates and readability. Shearwell provides a complete livestock management system allowing farmers to collect and collate data to help them make better- informed business decisions. The business ethos of ‘working to help the livestock farmer’ gives a clear focus to everything Shearwell does. Its livestock tags, handling systems, electronic readers and management software packages help farmers improve record keeping for both management and statutory purposes, and promote livestock health and welfare. Growth and expansion overseas Shearwell started in 1992 with a big idea, a huge drive and a small number of people manufacturing identification tags for livestock. Since then the company has grown consistently and rapidly in the UK and overseas markets. Shearwell is the largest seller of livestock tags in the UK, and in recent years has expanded its operations globally. It has manufacturing facilities in Australia and the United States, with additional representatives in New Zealand, Canada and South Africa. Shearwell Data already exports to 35 countries and employs more than 150 people worldwide. Overseas sales represent almost a third of its
annual turnover with a clear strategy and plans to further extend its export market reach over the coming years. On receipt of the King’s Award, Richard and Carolyne Webber, farmers, founders and managing directors of Shearwell Data, say, “We are delighted to have been awarded the King’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade.
