WITTENSTEIN high integrity systems (WHIS) is a global leader in safety-critical embedded systems, based in Bristol. The company’s excellence in international trade has been recognised with the prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise in the International Trade category. This accolade highlights WHIS’ remarkable success in exporting its products, notably SAFERTOS®, its safety critical Real Time Operating System (RTOS), impressively doubling the company’s order intake over the past two years. WHIS, a subsidiary of the WITTENSTEIN group, which was established in 1949, has been delivering safety critical software for more than 25 years. A safety critical RTOS is a specialised software component designed to reliably and predictably manage hardware and software resources in systems where failure could result in loss of life, significant property damage, or mission failure. The company’s unique advantage lies in its specialisation in safety within the software industry, ensuring it brings direct experience in developing safety-critical applications. Examples of end applications include flight control systems, implanted medical devices, and autonomous drive systems. WHIS technologies are trusted worldwide, supported by comprehensive services and outstanding technical expertise, and strengthened through a robust network of partners, such as Qualcomm, AMD, NXP, TI and Infineon. This is cemented by WHIS operating globally, having delivered its products to over 46 countries, with a 100% success rate in its product being certified in the final application.

Commitment to safety WHIS’ journey has been marked by a number of key milestones. Markedly, SAFERTOS® was independently certified on the first iteration by TÜV SÜD back in 2007. Since then, WHIS has become certified to multiple functional safety standards, such as ISO 26262 (automotive) and IEC 61508 (industrial), and fully supports IEC 62304 (medical) and DO 178C (aerospace). This results in a trusted product that is dependable in the most demanding environments. Beyond safety, for the highest security- critical environments, WHIS also offers the Enhanced Security Module, which is designed in accordance with the automotive security standard ISO 21434. exceptional quality management systems and standards for systems development. This is achieved through a rigorous Software Quality Assurance (SQA) process and comprehensive SQA Gate Reviews. WHIS is also certified by ISO 9001 and has achieved an ASPICE Level 2 certification, working towards Level 3. A team effort This award recognises the hard work of the entire WHIS team, some of whom have been dedicated to the business for decades. This is a testament to the strong core values of the team and the ‘Great Place To Work’ accreditation WHIS recently accomplished. There has also been significant expansion in headcount in recent years, which has resulted in the planned move to a larger office space. Andrew Longhurst, Managing Director, has been working for WHIS for more than 24 years. He says, “It’s been fantastic to see how the company has developed from a very small ember into a renowned international company.
