Deployed on in-service passenger trains, PANDAS-V® continuously records the dynamic interaction between the pantograph and overhead line equipment (OLE). The system consists of a roof-mounted edge processing
camera – precisely synchronised with a pantograph-mounted wireless accelerometer, delivering intelligent video capture at the exact moment of an impact, ensuring that no early warning signs of potential failure are missed. This sophisticated hardware incorporates several pioneering innovations, including a unique, patent-pending wiper-scraper mechanism for maintaining clear optics in all weather conditions and environments, advanced on- board self-diagnostics to ensure continuous reliability, and powerful edge computing. This on-board processing capability allows PANDAS-V® to perform AI-driven, real-time analysis and diagnostics of infrastructure conditions, setting it apart as an intelligent, rapid response, autonomous monitoring platform rather than a passive data collection/reporting system. High-definition footage is processed in real- time using multiple machine learning models that analyse each video frame at high speed. PANDAS-V® can automatically raise alarms within seconds of an event, whether it is an impact between the pantograph and OLE infrastructure, broken dropper wires, or deviations from baseline measurements of contact wire. This speed is critical, as it allows stakeholders to act before problems escalate, rather than receiving reports hours or even days after the fact when it is often too late to prevent damage.
