“Serving The Industry For More Than Fifty Years”
New Renewable Energy Facility Unveiled reported by Greg Kishbaugh O n July 16, a gathering of county officials, staff, engineers and con- tractors at theTajiguas landfill in Santa Barbara,California, for the grand opening of the County’s new recycling and waste management facility. The ReSource Center will allow the county to truck in and pro- cess its own waste, turning it into recyclables and renewable energy
Paper Industry Fuels Recycling
The Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) has announced that 62.2 percent of the industry’s fuel con- sumption in 2020 was based on renew- able energy. Fuel was largely derived from woody biomass from sustainably managed Euro- pean forests. CEPI also announced that specific CO2 emissions (per ton of prod- uct) had further decreased in 2020 by 3.1 percent. Decreased Consumption European paper and board consump- tion decreased by 5.3 percent in 2020 compared to 2019, totaling 71 million tons, with this change largely attributed to the slowing down of the European econ- omy and sanctuary restrictions during the pandemic. CEPI members produced 85.2 million tons of paper and board in 2020, a de- crease of 4.8 percent compared to 2019. This downward trend was also observed in other countries, such as the United States, Japan, Brazil and Canada. As a result, pulp consumption de- creased by 6.4 percent, with total pulp production decreasing by 4.7 percent. Market pulp output, however, remained unchanged.
The new recycling facility will boost Santa Barbara county’s diversion rate by 60 percent.

rather than sending it to landfill. The facility will boost the county’s diversion rate by 60 percent, to a total diversion rate of 85 percent. Drastically reducing the amount of material buried will help extend the life of the landfill by a decade (the landfill was previously project- ed to reach capacity in the next few years). The ReSource Center will accept solid waste from the South Coast and Santa Ynez Valley areas of Santa Barbara County, including the

Waste Harmonics Acquires Contelligent
Waste Harmonics, a national managed waste service pro- vider based in Rochester, New York, has acquired Contelli- gent, an intelligent container monitoring solutions and ana- lytics company based in Chicago, Illinois. The company says with the acquisition, it will expand the breadth of its service offerings like iWaste, a cloud-based dashboard that provides real-time fullness status, activity data and equipment health services. Waste Harmonics is adding more than 10,000 devices to its network in the United States and Canada. It now has customers in Israel, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Austra- lia, India, Asia and Europe. In the next 18 months, tens of thousands of Waste Harmonics’ iWaste and Contelligent’s collective devices will be deployed in various industries in- ternationally, the company said. Ravago Acquires Stake In Alterra Energy Luxembourg-based Ravago, a polymer recycling and distri- bution company, has acquired an equity interest in Alterra Energy, headquartered in Akron, Ohio. The companies plan to combine forces to provide integrated recycling solutions that support the transition toward decarbonization, decreas- ing virgin fossil resource dependency and increasing circu- larity for petrochemical and chemical partners.Additionally, Ravago will be a strategic partner in supplying preprocessed plastic scrap to Alterra Energy’s Akron plant. Alterra Energy said its Akron plant, which was commis- sioned last year, can liquefy up to 60 tons per day of mixed plastic scrap for use as a feedstock for the manufacturing of plastics and chemicals. This is the second strategic partnership this year for Alter- ra Energy. In January, the company announced that Neste, a provider of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel that also helps deliver drop-in renewable and circular chem- ical solutions, acquired a minority stake in the company. Alterra Energy, which has developed and commercialized a continuous, advanced recycling technology that uses py- rolysis to transform end-of-life plastics into petrochemical feedstock, will process the Ravago-supplied plastic scrap into ISCC PLUS certified material. Alterra will then market this material for further refining and conversion into circu- lar building blocks for the plastics and chemicals producing industry. Ravago represents more than 6.6 million metric tons of an- nual polymer sales, serving more than 50,000 active custom- ers through more than 325 locations across more than 55 countries worldwide. Ravago’s production capability con- sists of more than 45 manufacturing facilities, 19 of which are recycling and compounding plants in North America, Europe,Asia and Africa with a combined annual capacity of more than 775,000 metric tons; 13 of which are production plants in Europe that offer finished product solutions for the building sector; and seven of which are chemicals plants and 6 are application laboratories for its chemicals business.

Purdue Develops New Way To Recycle Polyolefin Plastics Single-use plastic scrap continues to be a growing prob- lem internationally with only 9 percent of the 8.3 billion tons of plastic produced in the last 65 years being recycled. One of the biggest contributors to this issue is polyolefins, such as polypropylene and polyethylene. Researchers at Purdue University are working to solve that problem by commercializing a new process of recycling plastics called low-pressure hydrothermal processing. Pur- due University researcher and developer Linda Wang said the process is an economically and environmentally safer way to recycle polyolefin plastics than other methods, such as pyrolysis and depolymerization. Wang said her method of recycling polyolefins can cre- ate products like gasoline, diesel fuel and other high-value items. Low-pressure hydrothermal processing works by melting plastic in supercritical water using low pressure to convert plastic into naphtha.Once converted, it can be used as a feedstock for other chemicals or further separated into specialty solvents or other products. The process can recy- cle up to 90 percent of polyolefin plastics and takes about 45 minutes to complete,Wang said. The project is in the process of being commercialized by Hasler Ventures LLC.That company is working with Ameri- can Resources Corp. to build a plant in Fishers, Indiana. Dan Hasler, the company’s President, said the small-scale plant will go live in about two years.

MRFs Receive Glass Recycling Coalition’s Gold Certification The Glass Recycling Coalition (GRC),Ann Arbor,Michigan, has awarded two material recovery facilities (MRFs) with gold-level MRF glass certifications, including Mid America Recycling in Iowa and Single Stream Recyclers in Florida. The GRC’s free certification program has recognized more than 10 MRFs that have additional equipment or operational procedures to clean up glass in both single- and dual-stream systems. Mid America Recycling, the first MRF in Des Moines, Iowa, to receive this certification, operates a modern glass recy- cling facility in its MRF.MidAmerica Recycling has been pro- viding services in the recycling industry for 42 years. Mid America Recycling’s on-site beneficiation process re- moves contaminants and sorts green, amber and flint (clear) glass containers. Then the facility crushes the material into cullet that is sized to end-user specifications. The Des Moines-based MRF processes more than 30,000 tons of glass per year, producing furnace-ready cullet that is shipped to end-users throughout North America. GRC said Sarasota, Florida-based Single Stream Recyclers, which is owned by Texas-based Balcones Resources, is the first MRF in the state to receive GRC’s gold certification. That MRF integrates robotic arms, optical scanners and oth- er equipment to sort 50 tons of recyclables per hour. Launched in 2019, the GRC MRF Glass Certification pro- gram has awarded 11 certifications, two silver and nine gold.

Despite the obstacles presented by the pandemic, most mills ran without disruption in 2020, with some operating at reduced speed due to lower levels of demand. The pandemic accelerated the structural decline of graph- ic grades, with overall output falling by 19 percent, likely due to decreased demand from publishers, offices and com- mercial printing. However, the production of packaging paper and board as well as sanitary and household paper rose by 2.1 percent and 3.1 percent respectively in 2020, with specialty paper and board production remaining stable. Acceleration In E-Commerce These categories benefited from the acceleration of e-com- merce in the wake of the pandemic, with packaging paper and board being essential materials in the transportation and delivery of supplies such as medicine or food. Demand for sanitary and household grades also benefited from higher hygiene requirements during the pandemic. Net exports experienced a minor decrease, but still re- mained fairly stable. Market pulp exports grew by 2.8 per- cent, whilst paper and board exports decreased by 3.1 percent, a lower extent than production and imports (-4.5 percent). Combining market pulp and paper and board grades, CE- PI’s share of production going for export reached 26 per- cent in 2020. Overcoming Adversity Despite the pandemic’s impact on the availability and quality of paper for recycling throughout 2020, the Europe- an recycling rate increased by 1.4 percentage points, reach- ing 73.9 percent. This marks an increase of 40 percent, or 16 million tons, since 1998, the base year for the first voluntary commitment set in the European Declaration on Paper Recycling. CO2 direct emissions from the European paper industry also declined by 7.1 percent in 2020, largely due to reduced activity, but also efforts made by the industry to decarbonise. In November of last year, CEPI announced its decarboni- sation manifesto for the paper sector, with a headline target of 2030. The plan included three main areas for decarbonisation: product substitution, bio-based product markets, and sus- tainable forest management. This followed the 2019 forma- tion of ‘4evergreen’, an industry alliance set up by CEPI to drive the use of fibre-based packaging. Road Ahead Looking ahead, CEPI expects the demand for paper and board to benefit from the economic rebound forecast for 2021.The EU economy is estimated to grow by 4.2 percent this year, and to strengthen to around 4.4 percent in 2022, according to the European Commission. As of the end of April 2021, the production of paper and board in CEPI countries increased by 1 percent over the same period of the previous year. European Paper Industry (Cont’d from Page 1)

New Facility (Cont’d from Page 1) unincorporated communities of these areas as well as the cities of Santa Barbara, Goleta, Solvang, and Buellton. Joan Hartmann, Santa Barbara Supervisor, said at the opening that the facility “allows for recycling and reuse of materials, turning a liability into an asset.” She added that the site is the single greatest reduction of greenhouse gasses in the county. The ReSource Center brings in 600-700 tons of waste per day and around 150-180 tons of recyclables. Its massive state-of-the-art sorting facility sorts through the waste and separates it by size, weight, density, and composition. The MRF equipment was supplied by Van Dyk Recycling Solu- tions of Norwalk, CT and includes size reducers for liberat- ing bags, 3D trommels, anti-wrapping screens, air density separators, elliptical separators, 11 optical sorters to iden- tify recyclables by composition, and a high-capacity baler from Bollegraaf Recycling Solutions. The MRF is operated by Marborg Industries. Recycling Anticipation The county anticipates processing between 150-180,000 tons of trash and recyclables every year. Referring to the county’s commitment to having a recycling, renewable en- ergy, anaerobic digestion, and composting facility all on one site, John Dewey, CEO of Mustang Renewable Pow- er Ventures, the project developer, said,“Nobody else has done it like this in a single location with all these various components.” In addition to recyclables, the ReSource Center also re- covers organic material such as food scraps and other wet, heavy material. Organic waste makes up around 40-45 per- cent of the county’s trash. Once recovered, this waste is transferred up to the anaerobic digestor on site, where it is dumped into heated tunnels and sealed airtight. It is then pumped with a mixture of 97 percent water and 3 percent cattle manure to start the digestion process. The natural bacteria in the manure breaks down the organic waste to produce methane gas. The methane gas is then harnessed to create renewable electricity that is sold back to SoCal Edison (Southern California’s primary electricity supply company). The electricity produced is enough to power the Resource Center itself, as well as about 1000-1200 homes. Additionally, the amount of carbon emissions contained in this process is the equivalent of removing 29,000 cars from the road each year. Meeting Demand But the process is not over yet. The leftover material in the anaerobic digester tunnels is then sent to the site’s com- poster, where the last bit of glass or film plastic is removed and the remaining compost is dried out.The county already has demand for the compost from local farmers. The com- post machinery is a densimetric table supplied by Van Dyk with manufacturer Allgaier Process Technology. LeslieWells,Deputy PublicWorks Director, said the facility allows Santa Barbara to take responsibility for its own waste material and turn it into benefits for the community.

BIR Confirms In-Person October Event
Buyer’s Guide
The Brussels, Belgium-based Bureau of International Re- cycling (BIR) has confirmed it will hold its first in-person event since 2019 when it hosts the BIR Global Trading Fo- rum October 25-26 in Brussels. The October 2021 event is slightly rebranded from the former BIR Autumn Convention. Regarding the new event, the BIR writes, “The focus will be put on trading and net- working, with a framework program [that] features a special edition of ‘The Challenge’ as [its] centerpiece.” LafargeHolcim, Army Corps Of Engineers Cooperate LafargeHolcim, Zug, Switzerland, along with its subsid- iary company, Geocycle, formed a cooperative agreement research project with the U.S.Army Corps of Engineers’ En- gineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) to study how construction and demolition (C&D) materials can be used for energy recovery and mineral recycling. Under this agreement, the ERDC will provide technical assistance and $3.4 million to conduct a waste characteriza- tion study and develop a basic research program to demon- strate how C&D debris from across U.S.military installations may be used to create alternative fuels and alternative raw materials for the production of new, more sustainable, con- struction materials. This research will utilize resources at Geocycle’s Holly Hill Research Center in South Carolina and Holcim Ltd.’s Global Innovation Center in Lyon, France. New Sustainability Initiative Emphasizes Recycling The Paper and Packaging Board’s How Life Unfolds campaign launched an integrated communication effort with sustainabil- ity messaging at the center. The initiative includes a microsite, animated video, digital banners, and print ads targeting the Pa- per and Packaging Board’s (P+PB) custom consumer audience, Expressives, with a focus on 18-34-year olds and new platforms, includingTikTok, to reach them. According to a Sustainability Positioning and Messaging Research study conducted by P+PB and Isobar in 2020, 58 percent of consumers believe U.S. forests are shrinking. However, forests in the last 30 years have increased by more than 33 million acres. The same P+PB study also indicates that once consumers were made aware of the industry’s sustainability efforts that protect forests and habitats, along with product innovation stories, they appreciated the paper and packaging industry and its products more.
