BIR Confirms In-Person October Event

Buyer’s Guide

The Brussels, Belgium-based Bureau of International Re- cycling (BIR) has confirmed it will hold its first in-person event since 2019 when it hosts the BIR Global Trading Fo- rum October 25-26 in Brussels. The October 2021 event is slightly rebranded from the former BIR Autumn Convention. Regarding the new event, the BIR writes, “The focus will be put on trading and net- working, with a framework program [that] features a special edition of ‘The Challenge’ as [its] centerpiece.” LafargeHolcim, Army Corps Of Engineers Cooperate LafargeHolcim, Zug, Switzerland, along with its subsid- iary company, Geocycle, formed a cooperative agreement research project with the U.S.Army Corps of Engineers’ En- gineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) to study how construction and demolition (C&D) materials can be used for energy recovery and mineral recycling. Under this agreement, the ERDC will provide technical assistance and $3.4 million to conduct a waste characteriza- tion study and develop a basic research program to demon- strate how C&D debris from across U.S.military installations may be used to create alternative fuels and alternative raw materials for the production of new, more sustainable, con- struction materials. This research will utilize resources at Geocycle’s Holly Hill Research Center in South Carolina and Holcim Ltd.’s Global Innovation Center in Lyon, France. New Sustainability Initiative Emphasizes Recycling The Paper and Packaging Board’s How Life Unfolds campaign launched an integrated communication effort with sustainabil- ity messaging at the center. The initiative includes a microsite, animated video, digital banners, and print ads targeting the Pa- per and Packaging Board’s (P+PB) custom consumer audience, Expressives, with a focus on 18-34-year olds and new platforms, includingTikTok, to reach them. According to a Sustainability Positioning and Messaging Research study conducted by P+PB and Isobar in 2020, 58 percent of consumers believe U.S. forests are shrinking. However, forests in the last 30 years have increased by more than 33 million acres. The same P+PB study also indicates that once consumers were made aware of the industry’s sustainability efforts that protect forests and habitats, along with product innovation stories, they appreciated the paper and packaging industry and its products more.
