PIPERHILL CONSTRUCTION FLIES HIGH WITH £25M AIRPORT PROJECT
REPRESENTING ITS LARGEST AND MOST COMPLEX PROJECT TO DATE, THE PORTADOWN CONTRACTOR HAS DELIVERED AN EXTENSION AND UPGRADE TO NORTHERN IRELAND’S BUSIEST AIRPORT…
Completing works amid ongoing operations at Northern Ireland’s busiest airport was among challenges faced by Piperhill Construction Limited in its delivery of a £25m upgrade and extension at Belfast International Airport. This was a complex contract delivering a new security hall capable of accommodating next generation x-ray and scanning equipment-alongside a refresh of passenger facilities and a new duty free area. The project also required meticulous coordination of works with multiple stakeholders from fire and police services to owner/operator VINCI Airports. Representing phase one of a £100m five-year investment programme by VINCI, the extension and upgrade was officially opened by First Minister Michelle O’Neill and deputy First Minister
Emma Little-Pengelly on May 6. While Piperhill Construction has previously completed smaller projects at Belfast International, including the refurbishment and fit out of new restroom facilities and upgrades to its departure lounge, phase one represents its largest project to date as main contractor. The new two-storey terminal extension includes a security hall featuring next- generation security equipment, an immersive new duty free in association with Lagardère Travel Retail, and enhancements to the arrivals area including a new external forecourt. A wide-open space providing passengers with a more relaxed experience, the new security hall has been purpose built to facilitate growing demand. Equipped with C3 cabin baggage scanners and full-body
scanners, passengers no longer need to remove liquids or electronics from their hand luggage. Totalling over 7,400sqm of development, the project includes over 2,000sqm of internal refurbishment within the existing terminal to create new commercial units, car hire desks and staff space. Also encompassed are a 1,700 sqm, walk-through duty free, food and beverage and travel essentials area, and external landscaping with a new taxi rank, coach parking and service yard. Offering direct access from the main arrivals area, passengers can access all ground transport and car parks via a new link corridor. With Belfast International Airport facilitating employment for over 4,000 people, and handling nearly seven million passengers a year, coordinating
“The most satisfying element for us was being able to deliver such a prestigious project on our doorstep.”
