works amid a live airport environment required careful planning. In addition to its management team, Piperhill Construction had a team of up to 100 on site daily throughout the 20-month project, with works including demolition of an existing canopy and buildings. Elements involved in the construction of the new departure terminal included a steel frame, precast concrete floors overlaid with terrazzo flooring, M&E services and cladding. Adam Shingleton, Project Manager, said, “We had a phased handover of the new security area halfway through the project, prioritising certain M&E systems over others to make sure it could be used by the public while the rest of the project continued. “An existing Travelex currency exchange facility had to be kept operational in the departure terminal, while the structure behind the existing departures lounge had to be temporarily supported to prepare for construction of the new building without disrupting any

As the airport was time constrained for the work to be carried out, it has allowed Piperhill Construction to showcase our ability to deliver first-class projects. “We were keen to involve and support local sub-contractors and suppliers, rather than bringing in specialists from the UK. Not only did this give us the ability to work closely with the supply chain, but also to help local contractors expand and allow them to include this project within their portfolio, hopefully assisting them to grow for the future. “Like any project, there were challenges along the way but, with close
