TASKED WITH THE DESIGN, BUILD AND DELIVERY OF MULTIPLE SUB-CONTRACT PACKAGES WITHIN A FOUR-WEEK PROGRAMME, OH&M COMPLETED ITS COMMISSION WITH TIME TO SPARE… OH&M showcases its multidisciplinary skills at Belfast International Airport
Initially commissioned to supply labour for the construction of Belfast International Airport’s £25m upgrade and extension, OH&M construction Services Ltd’s remit evolved to include sub-contract packages spanning multiple disciplines. The scope of works provided by the Lurgan business included first- and second-fix joinery, stainless-steel handrails, skirting, bump rails and chequer-plate protection for back-of- house zones. OH&M also supplied and fit steel stairs, flooring and external cladding, while its standout element of the project was the supply and installation of a structural steel sculpture and centrepiece in the new duty-free hall. Tasked with the design, build and delivery of all packages within a four- week programme, OH&M completed its commission with time to spare. Paul O’Hanlon, Director, said, “The circular
steel sculpture forming the centrepiece of the Duty Free was a great challenge, but one we embraced. Over 11 tonnes of steel spanning 21m was required on the second floor of a live building. “This had to be fabricated off site based on on-site measurements, then de- assembled, brought to site in sections, navigated through a busy airport to its location and welded on site with what had to be millimetre precision. “We are extremely proud of how the sculpture turned out and hope to gain similar work across the UK and further afield off the back of this.” Working in a live environment presented many challenges, with thousands of passengers passing through the doors every day. “Very careful preparation and planning had to be ensured to achieve all the elements of work as effectively and efficiently as possible, whilst always meeting deadlines and programme,” said Paul.
“Site security was of the utmost importance and delivery of materials was often done out of hours and during the night so as not to disrupt passengers or flight times.” Now in its fourth year of trading, OH&M is a construction services company supplying labour and sub-contracting packages to main contractors and construction sites throughout the UK and Ireland. Employing a team of over 100 staff, the business focuses on quality, workmanship, reliability and its ability to meet target dates.
