installed in Northern Ireland to date, significantly reducing energy consumption while setting new standards for sustainable industrial construction. The 90 additional jobs created when the facility becomes fully operational will take Sysco’s Northern Ireland workforce to more than 300 people. “Achieving the specified operating temperature in such a large-scale refrigerated facility while meeting our sustainability commitments was a significant milestone,” said Adam. “We’re proud to have played a role in delivering such an innovative facility. By integrating natural refrigerant technology with a carefully planned construction approach, we’ve helped create a sustainable, future- ready solution for Sysco. “Watching the steel structure rise and the building envelope come together was incredibly rewarding, you could see how our systematic approach was translating into a world-class facility that would transform Sysco’s operations.” Founded by six brothers in 1956, Heron Bros has grown into a £180m construction and property development business that
proudly maintains its family-owned values. With over 250 employees, the company has become a trusted partner for complex projects across the UK, Ireland and Europe. Heron Bros leads the industry in delivering technically-demanding projects that combine operational excellence with sustainable innovation. The Sysco facility is the latest addition to Heron Bros’ portfolio of innovative, technology- driven developments, showcasing the company’s ability to deliver sustainable, high-quality solutions for clients across the construction sector.
“We implemented a rigorous quality assurance process, digitally recording each joint and interface in the envelope,” said Adam. “This attention to detail ensured high-quality workmanship and eliminated any thermal bridging that could affect the facility’s operation.” Heron Bros showcased its expertise in industrial construction by using a low- water concrete mix and custom-designed floor joints to manage the refrigeration system’s demanding thermal conditions. The project features advanced sustainable technologies that reflect Heron Bros’ and Sysco’s shared commitment to environmental responsibility. The facility features electric vehicle chargers for staff and fleet, rainwater harvesting systems and the latest heat pump technology. Over 2,600 high-efficiency solar panels installed at the new facility are expected to generate up to 803MWh of renewable electricity per year, reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 5,000 tonnes over 20 years. It also features one of the largest natural refrigerant systems
