CLOSE COORDINATION AND DETAILED DESIGN DISCUSSIONS INFORMED CROSS’S SUCCESSFUL INSTALLATION OF ONE OF THE LARGEST CO2 SYSTEMS IN NORTHERN IRELAND… REFRIGERATION SYSTEM
Cross was asked to design, supply, install and commission a CO2 refrigeration system for Sysco Ireland’s new-build facility at Nutt’s Corner, featuring a large freezer room and chill stores incorporating a loading dock. The system is designed to recover waste heat from refrigeration packs to power the underfloor heating in the freezer to prevent frost heave; carry out evaporator defrosts to save on standard electric; and generate 2,000L of sanitary hot water per day for use in office spaces. Among many challenges of the project were the distribution and control of heat recovered from refrigeration packs. This was achieved by using electronic control valves and pumps to modulate the system flows while using a front-end controller to monitor all parameters.
Remote monitoring was set up to ensure optimum performance of the overall plant. A further challenge was installing maintainable refrigeration equipment at a high level which would not impact on racking and working spaces within the refrigerated environments. Any issues were overcome through close coordination and detailed design discussions on every element of the room heat exchangers with the structural and architectural packages. PODs were developed on the roof to house all the evaporators and controls to avoid interrupting site operations during maintenance or repair within the freezer and cold spaces themselves.
